CWMAVON boxer Darren Edwards will be going for gold after securing his place for the Commonwealth Games.

The 29-year-old booked his spot in the Wales team after outclassing Wrexham fighter Mark Roberts in the Welsh ABA finals in Swansea last week.

Edwards, who represents Cwmavon Hornets ABC, led 20-2 after two rounds before the referee stopped the contest in the third and final round.

The victory ensured Edwards a place on the plane to India in October.

Lightweight Edwards is already dreaming of winning gold following his previous bronzemedal achievement at the 2006 Games in Melbourne.

Edwards hung up his gloves following that event, and a desire to fight at his third Games generated a recent return to the ring.

"Winning bronze in 2006 was a big achievement, but I wasn't enjoying the sport so much so I took time out," said Edwards.

"I've watched boxing closely over the past few years and I think in Wales it has gone downhill a little in terms of talent.

"I knew I could make a successful return and fighting at the Commonwealth Games was the reason behind my return.

"I boxed chanel 2010 collection exactly as I had planned at the Welsh ABAs. I was very patient and picked him off with some nice shots.

"Now I can concentrate on my preparations for India. I'll have a few weeks to chill out and then step up training.

"The ambition is to go to India and win gold -- that would be a dream come true."

Edwards could have a slight advantage over some of his opponents at the Games as he fought in Delhi a fortnight ago.

He boxed in the Commonwealth Federation Games -- a warm-up to the main tournament -- and reached the quarter-final.

Edwards expects the Games to be a big hit.

"India's a lovely country and although the stadium needs a little work done, I think there's going to be a brilliant atmosphere at the arena," added Edwards.

"There's going to be a lot of competition from India, England, Canada and Australia in boxing, but I'm confident I will hold my own."

MANHATTAN - It's no secret who gets the ball when Kansas State needs a basket.

Cartier Martin and David Hoskins, K-State's most prolific scoring duo in more than a decade, carried the Wildcats' offensively all season.

They did it again on Monday, combining for 45 of K-State's 65 points.

However, it wasn't enough to stop DePaul from ending the Wildcats' season with a 70-65 victory.

DePaul's Sammy Mejia and Wilson Chandler delivered a 1-2 punch of their own, scoring 18 points apiece and shooting a combined 14 for 24 from the floor.

K-State's supporting cast, meanwhile, was noticeably absent. Aside from Clent Stewart's 15 points, no other Wildcat scored more than two.

Senior Akeem Wright dished out nine assists but didn't hit a shot from the field.

Lance Harris, K-State's third-leading scorer at 10.7 points per game, was held scoreless for just the third time this season.

Even so, Martin and Hoskins nearly delivered a victory for the Wildcats. Hoskins scored five straight points to pull K-State within five with 3:19 to play, and Martin's thunderous slam off a Blake Young miss cut DePaul's lead to 63-60.

Two free throws from Draelon Burns and a layup from Marcus Heard put the game out of reach.

Martin finished with 21 points in his final game as a Wildcat, pushing his career total to 1,546. That ranks sixth on K-State's all- time list behind names like Mike Evans, Rolando Blackman and Steve Henson.

"What he'll be prouder of is he was on a team that got 23 wins and got this thing rolling," coach Bob Huggins said.

Sellout No. 6

Monday night marked K-State's sixth sellout of the season, the most since Bramlage Coliseum opened in 1988-89. K-State's average home attendance this season was 12,300, which ranks as the second- best in school history and the most since an average of 12,978 fans cheered on the 1988-89 team.

Monday's ESPN broadcast was K-State's 10th national television appearance of the season, the most in school history.

Subscribers of GoPowercat.com, a member of the Rivals.com network, bought and donated nearly 1,100 tickets for the DePaul game. The tickets were given to the Boys & Girls Club of Manhattan, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Riley, Geary, Pottawatomie and Saline counties, Fort Riley and other youth and community organizations in Manhattan and surrounding communities.

Teams from the North and East regions will punch their tickets to the NIT semifinals tonight.

Florida State (22-12) will play at Mississippi State (20-13) at 6 p.m.

in the North final, while North Carolina State (20-15) will visit West Virginia (24-9) at 8 p.m. in the East. Both games will be televised on ESPN.

The winners will meet in the semifinals on March 27 at Madison Square Garden. The NIT's other semifinal will pit the West winner, either DePaul or Air Force against South champ Clemson or Syracuse.

The NIT championship game will be played March 29.

More than 1,200 operating room nurses attended this morning's breakfast forum " Together We Can Save Lives Through Early Detection " sponsored by Medline Industries, Inc. , expecting to hear Olympic gold medalist Peggy Fleming talk about her skating career and battle with breast cancer. Fleming did not disappoint the early morning crowd. But they were also treated to a surprise appearance by several other celebrities of sorts -- the staff members from Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, OR., who starred in the " Pink Glove Dance ," a YouTube video sensation that has more than 7.9 million views to date.

"My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 80," said Kate Moser, a nurse at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI. "Now she is 85 and going strong. Hearing Peggy Fleming's story and seeing the people from the Pink Glove Dance today is exciting and inspiring."

St.-Louis-Cardinals

The forum was held in conjunction with the start of the Association of periOpertive Registered Nurses' 57th Congress held in Denver, CO. Raising breast cancer awareness among nurses is a key goal of Medline's campaign, as it is the leading cause of death for women age 40-55 and the average age of a nurse is 46.

Fleming, who won a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics at the age of 19, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998. She is now cancer free. Her story on how her ability to focus as a world-class athlete also benefited her when dealing with her breast cancer struck a chord with many of the nurses in the audience.

"Peggy is a great role model," said Mary Rogers, a nurse at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster, OH. "Her ability to balance her family, career and then take on breast cancer is an inspiration for all of us."

The "Pink Glove Dance" video showcases more than 200 hospital workers from Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, dancing in Medline's pink gloves. Since its launch last November, the video has generated almost 8 million views on YouTube, garnering national publicity and inspiring more than 15,000 viewers to post comments about their feelings on the video -- and countless others to talk about breast cancer, getting a mammogram or donating to breast cancer awareness.

At the event, Medline President Andy Mills presented National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) President Janelle Hail with a check for $117,000 to help fund mammograms for underserved women. Over the past four years, Medline has donated more than Replica Oris Watches Asia $500,000 to the NBCF as part of its campaign to promote early detection and awareness of breast cancer. Early detection (mammography is among the best forms of screening for breast cancer) can increase the five-year survival rate by more than 95 percent.
