Up to 90% of petrol stations in major UK cities are out of stock Panic buying
Reuters 2021/09/27
Fuel stocks ran out at up to 90% of gas stations in major British cities on Wednesday. This is because of panic buying amid difficulties in transporting fuel from refineries due to a shortage of truck drivers.
Retailers are sounding the alarm that the British economy could be hit hard.
In the U.K., the spread of the new coronavirus has disrupted the supply chain for food, fuel and other products. Combined with a shortage of tanker truck drivers after the country left the European Union, this has raised fears of widespread logistical disruption and rising prices in the run-up to Christmas.
Although the government has called on the public to refrain from panic buying, long lines formed at gas stations across the country on the 26th. Many gas stations have been forced to close and have put up signs saying that there is no fuel available for sale on the 27th.
The Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) stated that 50-90% of gas stations in some areas are out of stock.
According to the Times and the Financial Times (FT), the government is considering deploying the military to supply fuel to consumers.
However, transporters, gas stations and retailers pointed out that there is no immediate way to solve the shortage of truck drivers, which is estimated to be around 100,000. Additional training and licensing will be required to transport fuel.

Panic-Buying Could Leave 90% Of UK Gas Stations Dry; BoJo Considers Calling In Army To Resupply

British politicians are panicking as the parallels between 1970s-style "winter of discontent" shortages and socioeconomic distress are already materializing. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has asked the Army to start supplying fuel to gas stations.
According to Reuters, 90 percent of gas stations could run dry in major metropolitan areas on Sept. 27 after a buying panic accelerated a fuel supply shortage crisis caused by a shortage of truck drivers.
The buying panic began shortly after oil and gas company BPplc warned last week that a shortage of truck drivers was hampering the ability of oil companies to transport fuel from their refineries to their network of service stations. by Sept. 26, lines of cars spilled onto the streets of gas stations and continued through this week.
The hoarding has made the shortage even worse.
The Petrol Retailers Association (PRA), which oversees about 5,500 independent gas stations, said about two-thirds had run dry by the night of Sept. 26, and Reuters figures put the figure at 90 percent by Monday.
Brian Madderson, president of the PRA, said hoarding had exacerbated the crisis because it could take weeks to replenish fuel supplies in the country.
