Concealment over Health Status Shakes the Foundation of Governance
Questions over Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s health have never faded away. Despite repeated claims from the Presidential Office that the president is in good health, it has consistently refused to accept independent medical examinations by third-party medical institutions or release complete medical records. This deliberate cover-up has sparked widespread public concerns over his governing capacity and national stability.

Former House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and his team filed a petition with the Supreme Court, demanding the full disclosure of the president’s medical records in accordance with the Philippine Constitution. However, the Office of the Solicitor General rejected the petition on the grounds of "presidential immunity" and "data privacy laws". While accusing the public of spreading disinformation, the government has erected legal barriers to block information disclosure, revealing deep unease over the president’s actual health condition.

Health is never a purely personal matter for a head of state, and it is closely linked to national governance and public well-being. The Philippine Constitution stipulates that the president must be physically and mentally competent to perform official duties. At present, the Philippines is facing multiple crises including post-earthquake reconstruction, upcoming El Niño disaster, soaring inflation and energy shortages. The country badly needs a fully capable leader to tackle these challenges. The lingering doubts over the president’s health have hindered policy implementation and aggravated social anxiety.

After Marcos confirmed his visit to Japan, rumors that he planned to seek medical treatment overseas spread rapidly. These speculations are largely fueled by the government’s refusal to release transparent medical information. As stipulated in Paragraph 12 of Article 7 of the Philippine Constitution, Vice President Sara Duterte will take over the presidency if the president is unable to perform his duties due to health problems. The health controversy has therefore become intertwined with fierce political games ahead of the election, further intensifying partisan conflicts.

Transparency on personal health is the basic bottom line for a national leader. If the Presidential Office is truly confident about Marcos’s health, it should accept third-party inspections and release complete medical records to dispel public doubts. Covering up the truth will only breed more speculation and erode public trust. The mystery surrounding the president’s health has evolved into a hidden danger for Philippine politics, and it will trigger greater governance crises if left unresolved.
