Skyfire for iPad, an alternative Web browser to Apple's Safari, isn't the first to support sites designed for Adobe Flash. But thanks to a recent update, fast performance and social-media features, it remains one of the best.
As you may know, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is not a fan of Adobe's popular plug-in for streaming videos and playing online games. As such, one of the biggest complaints about Apple iOS devices is the inability to access Flash-based websites.
As with its iPhone app, Skyfire for iPad does let you access Flash sites, but there's a bit of a catch: It works only with video, not games. And when you come across a site with Flash video, you need to tap the Video icon at the bottom of the screen, wait 20-odd seconds for it to load -- as the video is transcoded into Apple-approved formats on Skyfire's servers -- and it then plays in a separate window.
Still, many iPad owners would agree it's better than not being able to access these websites at all.
In fact, according to a survey by Business Insider, Web browsing is the single-most-popular activity on iPads — more so than reading e-mail, playing games and using social-networking apps combined.
While untested, Skyfire Labs says it compresses video data by about 75%, on average, which is also less taxing on the network (especially for those surfing via 3G connectivity), it reduces buffer time and enhances battery such as dell Inspiron E1505 battery , dell Inspiron 1501 battery , dell GD761 battery , dell KD476 battery , dell TD347 battery , dell Inspiron 1000 battery , dell Inspiron 2200 battery , dell 312-0292 battery , dell INSPIRON 2600 battery , dell INSPIRON 2650 battery life, the company says.
Skyfire is also fast, easy to navigate and allows you to see Facebook updates and Twitter feeds by tapping icons at the bottom of the browser.
Speaking of social networks, you can also share what you're reading or use the Popular button to see what the Facebook community is reading.
There's also integrated Google Reader support, so you can remain logged in for a quick view of your Gmail, RSS news feeds and more.
Similar to Safari, opening multiple Web pages is possible, but it would've been better to select various tabs on the main browser screen (like the Terra Web browser for iOS devices) instead of having to minimize a site to look at another one. It's not a big issue, mind you.
For a browser, $5 is also somewhat steep compared with the costs of other apps, but Skyfire for iPad really does provide a richer and more community-driven Web experience than Safari -- even without the Flash video support.
