Overall impression of Beijing and Shanghai:
Hardly anyone speaks english even though you stay at a 4-5 star business hotel. Service within the hotel isn't very friendly as you would experience at other asian countries and in general not very helpful. It is highly advised that one speaks mandarin to get around there.
Sightseeing is an amazing experience, there is so much to see. Maybe next time i'll go back and go to the places i haven't been to.
People in general a pretty rude, they push and shove and don't apologise. In order to survive there and to get around, you will need to be as rough as they are, or else you won't get anywhere especially on the metro. Get used to the care factor of zero attitude.
Hygiene isn't something they take note of, spitting and blowing their nose straight onto the ground without a tissue is considered normal. This is something not acceptable in a western country and some asian countries, let alone coughing without covering your mouth.
You must always look after your personal belongings, theives are high skilled in stealing wallets etc and you wouldn't even notice!
I recommend that one takes a tour organised in their own country to come and visit and that you are staying an more popular accomodation.
