Catenative Verb+to-infinitiveの意味を正しく説明することができない。
Catenative Verbとはそもそもどういう動詞なのか？を学校英文法では教えませんし、そのCatenative Verb+to-infinitiveとなった場合、どういう意味になるか？も教えません。
教えないというより「無視」しています。もっと言うなら学校英文法では説明できないので「逃げている」のです。この点を日本の学習者は気がついていないのが現状です。私に言わせれば、99.99%の日本人は英語を学習している時は「思考停止」状態になっているのです。
Catenative Verbのfail+to-infinitive→英英辞書にはfailはintransitive verbと説明されています。即ちto+infinitiveはObjectではないのです。
He failed to come home at the usual time.
If you fail to comply, you can be fined.
The letter failed to arrive.
She failed to reach the Wimbledon Final this year.
Catenative Verb のrefuse+to-infinitive→Oxford Learner's Dictionariesには下記の用例のrefuseはtransitive verbと説明されています。to-infinitiveはobjectである可能性がありますが、しかし、それではfailの場合が説明できなくなります。即ちCatenative Verb+to-infinitiveのto-infinitiveは学校英文法では説明が不可能なのです。
