I'm not much into
the Japanese music scene,
but occasionally,
I would come across a song
that pulls me in.
Here's one called "Sakura"
by a group named "Kobukuro".
They are two guys who started out
playing their guitars and singing
on street corners.
Of course they write their own
music and lyrics,
and it amazes me that
such rough-looking guys
can write such a tender song...
Just goes to show,
how it never pays to judge
a book
by it's cover.
Before you listen to "Sakura,"
let me tell you a bit
about the lyrics...
First of all,
"sakura" means 'cherry blossom.'
It's a maybe-not-so-well-know fact
that cherry blossoms,
small and fragile-looking as they are,
are very strong.
In full bloom, no wind or rain
can tear them from their branches.
But when their brief reign is over,
they simply let go...
to make room for the young leaves.
The lyrics to this song
are simply beautiful.
I interpret them like this:
All of life's trials & tribulations
and the emotions that go with them
are like sakura petals.
So strong, so beautiful,
so fragile, so brief.
And soon they all fall,
to be forgotten,
to make way for new beginnings.
Each falling petal could represent
a thought unspoken
a tear unshed
a love undeclared
all forgotten in time...
But the tree never dies,
and in the spring,
the flowers come again.
Well, if you're still interested,
have a listen:
