An old man lived alone／in the country.

He wanted to dig his potato garden／but it was very hard work／as the ground was hard.
（彼はジャガイモ畑を耕したかった／しかしとても大変な作業だった／土が固いので）
His only son Fred,／who used to help him,／was in prison.
（彼の一人息子フレッドは／よく手伝っていたのだが／（今は）刑務所にいた）
The old man wrote a letter to his son／and described his predicament.
（老人は息子に手紙を書いた／そして彼の苦しい状況を説明した）
Dear Fred,／ （フレッドへ／）
I am feeling pretty bad／because it looks like／I won't be able to plant my potato garden／this year.
（とても困ってるんだ／なぜならどうやら／ジャガイモ畑に種を植えることができそうにないから／今年は）
I'm just getting too old／to be digging up a garden plot.
（わしはもう歳をとりすぎてる／畑を耕すには）
If you were here, ／all my troubles would be over.
（お前がここにいれば／わしの悩みは全てなくなるのに）
I know you would dig the plot for me.
（お前ならわしのために畑を耕してくれただろう）

A few days later／he received a letter／from his son.
（数日後／彼は手紙をうけとった／息子から）
Dear Dad,／（父さんへ）
For heaven's sake,／Dad,／don't dig up that garden,
（たのむから／父さん、／あの畑を掘り起こさないでくれ）
that's where／I buried the BODIES.
（あそこが場所なんだ／僕が死体を埋めた）

At 4 am the next morning,／FBI agents and local police／arrived and dug up ／the entire area／without finding any bodies.
（翌朝４時に／ＦＢＩの捜査官と地元警察官が／到着して掘り起こした／畑をすべて／だが死体は見つからなかった）
They apologized to the old man and left.
（彼らは老人に謝罪して去って行った）
That same day／the old man received another letter／from his son.
（同日／老人はもう一通手紙を受け取った／息子から）
Dear Dad, （父さんへ）
Go ahead／and plant the potatoes now.
（さあ／これでジャガイモを植えられるだろう）
That's the best I could do／under the circumstances.
（これが僕にできる精一杯だよ／この状況では）
