話したいことが多すぎてどこから始まったほうがいいのか結構迷ったがとりあえず時系列で進むことに決めた。
前の自己紹介に「英語が嫌いだったけど今は好き」ということを書いた。なんで好きになったかを説明したほうがいいと思う。
その前になんでフランス人は英語が苦手かを話さないと。
上の地図を見たらすぐにわかるのはフランスはいろんな国に囲まれている。海外旅行が好きな人にピッタリ！
問題は昔その地形のせいで何回も争いが起きた。その中でフランス対イギリスの戦争はいくつかあった。
フランス人にとって一番有名なのはたぶん「百年戦争」と思う。一番有名といっても、正直ジャンヌ・ダルクの話を習った覚えしかない。
それ以外に勉強するイギリスとフランスの共通する歴史はウィリアム1世やナポレオンの敗北。ウイリアム1世は特に英雄として描かれている。「イギリスを支配したのはフランス人のウイリアム1世だけだ」みたいな感じだった。
残念ながら、ウイリアムはフランス人ではなく、ヴァイキングの子孫でありノルマン人だった。つまり、フランス人が習う歴史はイギリスに対しての優越感を育てる。
どんな国でもそういう関係はきっとあるだろう。
今は大分よくなったけど、自分のお父さんはまだイギリス人が嫌い。
ヨーロッパの中でもイギリスは異端児だった。
そのうえ、フランス人はもしかして世界一プライドが高い民族かもしれない。なので多くのフランス人は「フランスにずっと住むつもりだから英語なんかいらん」とか「外国人がフランスに来るならフランス語をはなすべき」とか考える。僕も長い間そう思った。
主題に戻ろう。
英語を好きになったのは高校に入る前の夏休みぐらいだった。たった15年前だけど世界は大分違った(おじいさんモード・オン)。
スマホもなかったしSNSもなかったから時間を潰すときは友達と出かけたり、テレビゲームしたり、本をよんだりするぐらいしかなかった。
特に漫画が好きだから、お兄さんとお姉さんが買った漫画を全部読んでた。けどその時漫画の翻訳は今より遅くて、チョイスも日本の1%しかなくて、値段も高くて、そんなに読めるチャンスはなかったけどどうしてももっと読みたかった。その時先輩の友達は「ネットでファンが英語で翻訳した漫画を読んだら？」とお勧めしてくれた。
「けど英語が全然無理」と僕は答えた。
今でもその友達の答えを生徒さんにそのまま語る。
「漫画はどんな内容についてもあるし、少年・少女漫画なら結構日常会話ぐらいのレベルの英語になるし、分らん時は文脈と絵でだいたい意味を推測できる。」
一番最初に英語で読んだ漫画はなんと大人気なナルトだった。最初の4・5巻はもうフランス語で読んだことあったから設定はもう知っていた。
そういう風に、気軽に英語を読むことになった。フランスの長～い夏休みに漫画を数えれないぐらい読んじまった。
How I ended up liking English
There are so many things I want to talk about I don't know where to begin so I decided to at least start chronologicaly.
In the previous self introduction, I wrote I hated English but not anymore. I think it's important for me to explain why I grew to like it. But even before that, I have to explain why French have troubles with English.
If you look at the map above, you'll realize one thing for sure: France is surrounded by many countries. Good if you like travelling!
The only thing is, because of that, there were many wars in the past. And amongst which many between France and England.
I think the most famous of such might be the "Hundred years war" for French. Though I say that, I truthfully don't remember learning anything more than the part with Jeanne d'Arc.
Apart from that, the common history between France and England we learn is mostly the story of William the conqueror and Napoleon's defeat. William the conqueror in particular is depicted as a hero. "The only one who ever conquerered England was William 1st and he was French" or something in this taste.
Unfortunately, William wasn't French, but Normand, decendants of vikings. The thing is, French feeling of superiority toward England is bred through History lessons.
Such things must happen everywhere.
Even if now our relation has improved, my father still hates British for example.
Even inside the EU, England has always been the "bad student".
To top it off, French might be the proudest people in the world. That's why many of us think things like "Why should I learn English if I'm going to live in France all my life?" or "If someone visits France, they ought to speak French." I thought that too for a long time.
Let's get back to the topic.
I started to like English during the summer break just before entering High school. That was only 15 years ago, but the world was quite different (Old geezer mode on). There were no smartphones, no social media, and the only way we had to kill time was to hang out with friends, play video games or read. As I particularly liked manga, I read every manga my brother and sister bought. But at the time, translations took longer than now, there was not even 1% of the manga translated, they were expensive, so I didn't have so much chance to read some, but I definitely wanted to read more. Then one of my friend recommanded me to try reading manga translated by fans online.
I answered him that my English level was too low for that.
Even today I still use my friend's answer as an explanation to my students.
"You can find manga on any kind of topics, and Shonen/Shojo mangas (Young boys, young girls oriented comics) use daily conversational English so when you don't understand you can still guess the meaning from the context or picture."
The first manga I read in English was none other than the super popular Naruto. I had already read the first 4 or 5 volumes in French and knew the story set up.
Like this, I started to read in English without any ambitions. During this looooooong French summer break, I read an uncountable number of manga.
