After returning to Los Angeles from Vegas, we boarded Amtrak once again for San Francisco, where we again imposed on our friend Alexei to let us stay with him for a couple of days before making for the port of Oakland on July 1 via the Bay Bridge. At the port we boarded the freighter Hanjin Dallas, making it our third freighter voyage. The Hanjin Dallas then made non-stop across the Pacific Ocean for the port of Pusan, South Korea.
ベガスからロスアンゼルスに戻ったあと、Amtrakでサンフランシスコに移動。前回お世話になった、SF在住の友人、アレクセイのアパートにまた泊めさせてもらった。そして7月1日、サンフランシスコからベイブリッジを越えて、オークランド港へ。この港から、今回の旅行で3度目の貨物船、「Hanjin Dallas」に乗り込んだ。オークランド出港後、「Hanjin Dallas」は太平洋をノンストップで横断し、韓国の釜山へ向かう。アメリカから、一気に東アジアへ移動だ。
The highlight of this voyage was the scenery immediately after departure. First the ship passed under the Bay Bridge that connects Oakland with San Francisco, and then after watching Alcatraz and downtown San Fran pass by on the left we passed under the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge. After that the Hanjin Dallas made west earnestly over the Pacific, leaving only the vast expanse of the sea. In fact, though, the ship takes the shortest route possible, and so from a geographical point of view makes a northward arc-style of route from Oakland to Pusan. Thus we passed the Aleutian Islands and the Tsugaru Strait before entering the Sea of Japan and finally berthing in Pusan on July 13, as scheduled.
今回の航海のハイライトは、オークランドを出港した直後の景色だった。船はまず、サンフランシスコとオークランドを結ぶベイブリッジの下をくぐり、そして、アルカトラズとサンフランシスコの街を左に見ながら、次にゴールデンゲートブリッジをくぐる。その後は、太平洋をひたすら西に進むだけだったから、大海原の景色がひたすら続いた。船は最短ルートをたどるため、平面地図で見ると北に向かって弧を描くようなルートになっている。途中で、アリューシャン列島に近づき、日本の津軽海峡を通って日本海に入り、7月13日、予定通り釜山に到着した。

Aside from us, there were two other passengers on this trip, an American couple from Wyoming, Mary and Will. Both are biologists and after a short stay in Korea we bound to get on a plane for Thailand, where they planned to stay the next 5 months. It was their first time on a freighter and they really seemed to enjoy themselves. For us the third time was not the charm and we were more than a little bored; still, as with last time, we did manage without fail to get a least one ping-pong game in every day. And then with the intense PSP playing (Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories-what can you do?), the reading, and the DVD’s were somehow managed to kill our time each day.
今回の乗客は、私たち2人と、アメリカのワイオミング州から来たカップル、メアリーとウィル。2人とも生物学者で、この船で韓国に行き、そこから飛行機でタイに渡り、そこで5ヶ月間を過ごす予定なんだとか。貨物船での移動は初めてという2人は、貨物船ライフを満喫していた様子だった。私たちは、さすがに3回目だけあって、ちょっと退屈気味だった。でも、前回同様、食後の卓球は毎日欠かさず実行。あとはひたすらPSPと読書、そしてDVD鑑賞で時間をつぶす毎日だった。

In this way we made to the port of Pusan on the 13th, only to find that the port is new and inconveniently located as far as possible from Pusan such that we had to charter the local agent to take us into town. Progress-what can you do? At any rate, there we were again back in East Asia, feeling very much the end of our trip bearing down on us, but not before we do South and North Korea.
そんなこんなで、7月13日、釜山新港へ到着。この港、都心からかなり離れているため、現地代理店のおじさんが運転する車をチャーターして釜山の街まで移動した。久々の東アジア。いよいよ旅の終わりが近づいてきたことを実感。
