With our newly purchased 1991 Mazda 626 we headed off on little more than hope to Toronto from Regina. And for those who are unfamiliar with Canadian geography (I’m talking to you Toronto), this is not a one-day trip (2670km).

とはいってもはるか東の彼方にあるトロント。1日で着く距離ではない(2670km)。
On the first day we set out from our starting point in the Queen City at a very rude 06:00, hitting the No. 1 East on all (well, at least most) cylinders. The scenery for the first part of this trip was, you guessed it, wheat. Still in the morning we made it to Manitoba; not much of change here, save for the increasing presence of trees. Esshie had a difficult time keeping awake; luckily Dan was driving and used to the, er, scenery. By evening we had passed the Ontario border, and since there was only one driver, Dan, we decided to stay for the night at Dryden, Ontario. Total time on Day 1: 13 hours.
1日目はレジャイナを朝6時に出発した。ここからフリーウェイをひたすら東に進む。世界有数の麦の生産地であるサスカチュワン州にいる間は、麦畑の広がる平原の景色。この景色がざっと3時間くらい続く。午前中のうちに東隣のマニトバ州に入る。木が増えたくらいで、景色に大きな違いはない。何時間も同じような景色が続くので、眠くなって居眠り事故をおこす人もいるらしい。夕方、マニトバ州からオンタリオ州へ入り、この日はドライデンという小さな町で一泊した。1日目の走行時間、約１３時間。

Day 2 was a later start: we set out from Dryden at 08:00. On day 1 we did not make our target of Thunder Bay, and so decided to do all we could to pull out the stops on Day 2. With afternoon Lake Superior came into view. Very beautiful. But the way the roads are out there, no matter how fast you press on (our speedometer didn’t work, but we felt pretty confident that we were going quite fast), it just seems like you’re not getting any farther east. In the end, for Day 2, we made it to Sault St. Marie at 23:00. Thing is, the “Trans Canada” here at night is pitch black, and with the real threat of moose, etc and with only one driver, it can really wear you out (must be getting older, because Dan did this route in his 20’s alone and from early morning until late at night). Pile age (both Dan’s and the 626’s) on to yesterday’s drive and Dan was pooped. Total for Day 2: 15 hours.
2日目。朝8時半にドライデンを出発。1日目に思ったほど進めなかったので、この日は気合を入れてさらに長距離を移動。午後に入り、五大湖の1つスペリオル湖が見えてきた。時々見える湖がとても美しい。湖に沿ってどんどん東へ進むが、なんだか走っても走っても進まない気がしてくる。この日はがんばって夜11時まで走り続け、なんとかスー・セイント・マリーという町まで到達した。夜のフリーウェイは街灯もなく、非常に神経を使う。特に夜になると、野生のシカが飛び出してくることがあり、本当に危ないらしいので細心の注意が必要。昨日からの運転の疲れもあるので、さすがにこの日はぐったり。この日の走行時間は約15時間。

Day 3, like Day 2, was an 8am start. Again with the forest and the lake, east we went. Wanting to arrive in Toronto as early as possible, food breaks were limited to toilet trips and takeout-we meant business. And so by around 3pm we made it to the suburbs of Toronto. Problem is, while a big city (for Canada), there is very limited public transit-meaning that the roads are just clogged with cars. It took us over an hour to get downtown where our hotel (well, university residence that takes guests in summer) was. But we made it, vintage 626 and all. Total for Day 3: 9 hours.
3日目も朝8時半と早めに出発。森の中や湖の近くをさらに東に進む。なるべく早くトロントに着くようにと、食事休憩もろくにとらず、ひたすら走る。そして夕方３時頃やっとトロント郊外に到着。ただそこからが長くって、公共交通機関が少ないトロントでは車の利用者が多く、道がひどく混雑していて、ダウンタウンにある宿に着くまでそれからさらに1時間以上かかってしまった。それでもなんとか無事にトロントに到着。この日の走行時間約9時間。

And, eventually, Toronto/そこから1時間後、やっとトロントに到着
So, Regina to Toronto took us about 3 days (limited night driving). Have to say the old Mazda ran beautifully (yet another testament, as if another were needed, to why the bailout of American car makers should rankle every American and Canadian tax payer). There was some worry about a tire or whole axle falling off, but same turned out to be totally unfounded. Again, whilst Dan had done a much longer Regina to Halifax, Nova Scotia on the Trans Canada alone in his early 20’s in a little over 3 days, this was not bad for a guy (almost) in his mid-thirties with this car, no?
ということで、レジャイナからトロントまで、丸3日かかった。マツダ君、よく走ってくれました。途中でタイヤが飛んでいったりしないかとヒヤヒヤしてたけど、大丈夫でした。ダンは、学生時代、レジャイナからさらに東にあるノヴァ・スコシア州まで運転したこともあり（その時は3日かかったらしい）、車での長距離移動には慣れている様子だったけれど、3日続けての長距離運転、さすがに30過ぎの体にはけっこう応えたみたい。私も、助手席に乗っているだけで疲れた。ダン、運転お疲れさま～。
