We arrived at the port of Callao after a 30-minute taxi ride from Lima. This was our first cruise, and the ship was the “Radiance of the Seas“. Arriving at the port, the huge, white outline of the alongside ship was already clearly visible. We were then taken by shuttle bus from the port to the gangway, where we exchanged our passports for passes and gained entry to the massive and very showy main lobby, the edges of which were filled with guests already well into relax mode. We can say that we did feel somewhat reluctant, what with our less-than-clean backpacks and what not. Our room was windowless, but did have a nice, large bed, television, and a sofa. After 10 days in this well-equipped and comfortable room we arrived at our long-awaited destination: America. Just for a while we were able to avoid the constant moving, the packing and unpacking, the advertised-but-in-fact-lacking hot showers, and everything else-it was nice.
リマからタクシーで30分程走ると、カヤオ港に到着。この港で乗るのは初めてのクルーズ船。その名も「Radiance of the Seas（海の輝き）」。港に着くと、すでに白い巨大な船体が着岸しているのが見える。シャトルバスで入口まで行き、パスポートと引き換えにパスカードをもらって中に入ると、きらびやかなロビーがあり、その周りのソファーでは乗客がくつろいでいる。なんだか、薄汚いバックパッカーとして入るのはちょっと気が引ける雰囲気。通された部屋は窓無しだけれど、ふかふかベッドにテレビ、ソファーまで着いている。この快適な部屋で10日間過ごせば、待ちに待ったアメリカに到着だ。つらい長距離バス移動、お湯の出ないシャワー、荷解きと荷造りを繰り返す毎日から、しばらくおさらばできるだけでも、かなり嬉しい。
When you hear “cruise”, if you were like us what most likely crossed your mind were images of extravagance, or, at least, the word expensive; in fact, though, this 15-day voyage from Valparaiso, Chile to San Diego, California, with all meals included and free use of most facilities, cost only USD 599 per person! We decided to join the ship downline at Lima, and so the trip was only 10 days for us, but it was still a bargain at that price. As for eating, there were two restaurants: a casual-dress, buffet-style, all-you-can-eat restaurant; and a sort of up-scale (sometimes formal) restaurant (both included in the ticket price). Aside from that there are also two fancy pay restaurants as well. For activities, there are both indoor and outdoor pools, Jacuzzis, a fully-equipped gym, a rock-climbing wall, a basketball court, and a golf course. You can also pay to go to a spa and a beauty salon. For entertainment, there are numerous bars and nightclubs, and even a casino. In addition, there is even a large theatre that puts on different shows nightly. If you need to buy something on board, there are many shops selling everything from booze to snacks to Gucci bags and jewelry to watches. There’s even an art gallery to boot. And for those with kids, there is a games and arcade room. We were genuinely surprised by all they had to offer. But watch out, though-booze and internet access are ridiculously expensive: a 330ml beer is USD 6 plus tip; and internet access is, wait for it, USD 28 per hour (yes, you read that right, per hour, not per day)! We couldn’t help but ask at least twice if these prices were correct. Of course, to keep up this racket, no alcohol is permitted to be carried on board, and there is even an X-ray set up to enforce this. But with a little ingenuity you can easily beat this. For example, neither box wine nor soda-pop PET bottles are given a second look.
クルーズ船というと、なんとも豪勢で贅沢なイメージが付きまとうけれど、このクルーズ船はチリのバルパライソ発アメリカのサンディエゴ着の15日間の航行で、食事込み、ほとんどすべての施設を無料で使えて、たった599ドル（6万円弱）。私たちは途中から乗りこんだので、船で過ごしたのは10日間だけだったけれど、それでも安い。食事は、ビュッフェスタイルで食べられるカジュアルなレストランか、ちょっと高級な雰囲気のレストランがあり、どちらで食べても食事代込み。他に有料のレストランも2つある。屋外・屋内プール、温水ジャグジー、フィットネスジム、ロッククライミング、バスケットボール場、ゴルフ場もある。有料ながらスパや美容院まである。そして、複数のバーにナイトクラブ、カジノもある。大きな劇場では、毎晩、日替わりで色々なショーを見られる。お酒＆おつまみから、化粧品、バック、宝石、時計まで買えるお店もあれば、アートギャラリーもある。子ども連れの乗客のための、子供用の遊び場などもある。とにかく、なんでもあるのには驚いた。ただ、アルコール類とインターネットがバカ高い。ビール小瓶1本が6ドル（＋サービス料1ドル）、ネットなんて、1時間28ドル！値段を聞いた時、思わず聞き返してしまった。もちろん、この詐欺に近い値段をキープするために、船内にはアルコール類の持ち込みは禁止。なので、船に入るときは、毎回、X線の荷物チェックがあり、ビールやワインのボトルが見つかると、クルーズ最終日まで没収されてしまう。しかーし、このチェックは、ちょっと頭を使えば簡単にかいくぐれる。たとえばワインは箱入りを買えば、箱入りジュースに見えるし、スピリット系はペットボトルに入れてしまえばソフトドリンクに見える。簡単でしょ。

Every day from morning till night there are a variety of activities on offer, all of which is explained in a kind of newsletter delivered to your room; further, there is a channel on your TV dedicated to explaining this, and hosted by the “cruise director”. Then again, as most of the “activities” are bingo, trivia, dance classes, and charity walking, and the like, we limited ourselves to taking in the nightly shows. And so, while it was interesting to experience a cruise, since our characters did not agree much with those of most of the other passengers (by and large relatively wealthy elderly persons and/or cruise addicts), we spent most of our time reading, watching DVDs, and just waiting to get to America.
毎日、朝から夜まで色々なアクティビティがあり、その内容は毎日部屋に届けられる日報に書いてあるし、各部屋にあるテレビでは、アクティビティ担当のお兄さんがその日のプログラムを説明する番組まである。ただ、ビンゴとか、クイズとか、ダンスクラスとか、チャリティウォーキングとか、あまり興味の持てるアクティビティはなく、私達はせいぜい夜のショーを見に行くくらいだった。クルーズ船を体験できたのはなかなか面白かったけれど、全体的には、客僧（大多数が英語圏のお年寄り）と、船内のミニコミュニティ的雰囲気に何となくなじめず、読書と映画観賞で時間をつぶしながら、アメリカに着くのを待っていた。

Before arriving in San Diego, the cruise made calls at Manta, Ecuador and Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Neither is exactly a tourist hot spot, but thanks to regular calls by the cruise ships, tacky souvenir shops abound, and thrive. More, if you are so inclined, you can join in cruise-sponsored tours of such things as a Panama hat studio in Ecuador or a coffee farm in Costa Rica. We opted for checking email in cheap internet cafes and going shopping for “supplies” at the local supermarkets. By the way, our cruise also happened to coincide with the outbreak and concomitant panic of the H1N1 influenza that was spreading from Mexico, and, as a result, our ship’s scheduled calls in Mexico (all three of them) were canceled, and our arrival date in San Diego moved up by a day. To this news, many of the people who were expecting and counting on going to Mexico did not react well, in many cases demanding their money back or suggesting that the ship simply call at somewhere else instead, like Panama or even Hawaii. Suffice it to say that such a large ship cannot simply decide to change ports on a few days notice and is on a schedule, none of these requests could be accommodated. Still, the captain himself was available in person to explain to all those interested in detail as to why we couldn’t just show up in Panama or Hawaii and expect to get a berth and still somehow make the schedule. Nevertheless, Royal Caribbean International, knowing that many guests were unsatisfied, did offer to all guests 25% off their next cruise to Mexico. Nice, but since we are unlikely ever to cruise again, we would have preferred 25% off this one. Oh well, what can you do.
クルーズ船は、アメリカに到着する前に、エクアドルのマンタ、そしてコスタリカのプンタレナスに寄港。両方とも、とても観光地とは言えない小さな町だけれど、定期的にやってくるクルーズ船のお陰で、港近くのお土産屋さんは潤っているようだ。クルーズ船で申し込めば観光地ツアーにも参加できて、エクアドルのパナマ帽工房や、コスタリカのコーヒー農場なんかを見学できる。私たちは地元の安いネットカフェでメールチェック、そしてスーパーでお買い物だけ。ちなみに、この時期、巷ではメキシコで流行し始めた新型H1N1インフルエンザのニュースで持ちきりだったため、この船も、予定していたメキシコ寄港をすべて取りやめ、1日早くサンディエゴに到着することになった。メキシコを楽しみにしていた乗客からは、金返せとか、じゃあ代わりにパナマやハワイに行ってくれよ、とか、いろいろな不満・要望が出たけれど、こんな巨大な船が、急に予定外の港に寄港できるわけもなく、また時間も限られていたため、そういった要望は一切受け入れられなかった。船長自ら質疑応答の時間を設け、乗客に要望にこたえられない理由を説明していた。ただ、クルーズ会社ロイヤル・カリビアン・インターナショナル側は、乗客の不満を残したままではまずいと思ったのが、最終日、メキシコに寄港できなくなったお詫びとして、次に乗るメキシコ行きクルーズの料金を25％オフにすると言ってきた。おそらく、もう二度とクルーズ船に乗ることがない私たちとしては、できれば今回のクルーズ料金を25％オフにしてくれたらうれしかったんだけどなあ・・・。

After 10 days of cruising we finally arrived in San Diego. Been a while since we’ve been in a first world country. Perfectly aligned skyscrapers, spotless, shiny, new cars cruising down faultless asphalt streets, young women head-to-toe in posh fashion, iPod-listening, very intense joggers, and Starbucks and 7-11 on every corner. It’s almost overwhelming. All this but no Internet cafes, since, of course, everyone has his own laptop/iPhone/Blackberry. WiFi’s everywhere, but it doesn’t come cheap-our WiFi café coffee was a dear USD 5!
10日間のクルーズ生活を終え、アメリカのサンディエゴに到着。本当に久々の先進国。整然と立ち並ぶ高層ビルに、傷ひとつないピカピカの車が走る舗装道路、洗練されたファッションに身を包んだ女性、iPodを聞きながらジョギングにいそしむ人々、スターバックスにセブンイレブン・・・なんだかすべてが新鮮で、圧倒される。ネットカフェを探してみるが、自宅でネットできる人がほとんどの国で、そんなものは存在しない。WiFiのあるカフェに入り、5ドルもするコーヒーを飲みながら、つないだネットの速さに驚く。

As for San Diego itself, whilst a big city, it has a very laid-back and cheerful atmosphere about it, has terrific weather, and is populated by a very friendly folk-it’s a good town. Fits the image we had of California’s west coast to a T. From here we got on an Amtrak train for our next destination: the city on the bay, San Francisco. Aside from high prices, we are really looking forward to our trip through America.
サンディエゴは、大都市でありながら、明るくのんびりとした雰囲気で、天気もいいし、人は明るいし、とってもいい街。私が持っていたアメリカ西海岸のイメージそのものだ。ここサンディエゴからは、Amtrakの電車にのって、一気にサンフランシスコを目指す。値段が高いのは痛いけれど、これから始まるアメリカ周遊、楽しみになってきたぞ。
