The extremely uncomfortable and yet expensive bus from Istanbul finally arrived (late) in the main town of Nevsehir around 8am. Getting off here we looked for a shuttle or something to the small town of Goreme (about 10km away), our destination, only to be told that the bus we had just gotten off was going there. That’s funny because the guy who sold us the tickets in Istanbul told us that there were absolutely for sure and without no question no direct buses from Istanbul to Goreme-the town in the area where all the tourists go. Anyway, worked out well for us.
イスタンブールから、チケット代は高いのにものすごく狭くて座り心地の悪い夜行バスに揺られ、朝8時頃やっとカッパドキア地方の主要都市、ネブシェヒルに到着。バスを降りて、ネブシェヒルから10キロほど離れた目的地、ギョレメという小さな町までのシャトルバスを探していると、たった今まで乗っていた長距離バスがそのままギョレメまで行くことがわかった。ギョレメは観光客がたくさん集まる有名な町なのに、イスタンブールのバス会社の窓口では、イスタンブールからギョレメまで直接行くバスはないよ、とはっきり言われていた。結局、話がちがうけど、まあ私たちにとっては好都合。そのまま同じバスでギョレメに向かった。
Thanks to all the weird rocks about, the town of Goreme is a tourist magnet. In the high season. Come here in October, though, like we did, and you will be greeted by an empty town. All the shops and restaurants are still open, but there are just no people. And not without good reason, either. It’s cold here in October, damn cold. I’m talking 10~15 degrees cold. Top that off with a discounted room with a dysfunctional radiator (as we had), and you’ve got reason to wonder why you came.
こうして到着したギョレメは、奇石群に囲まれていて、シーズン中は観光客だらけ。でも、私たちのように10月に来れば、人もまばら。レストランやお土産屋さんは開いているけれど、お客さんはものすごく少ない。それもそのはず、10月のカッパドキアは本当に寒い！気温は10～15度くらいかな。その上、私たちが泊まった安宿の部屋は、ラジエーターがほとんど機能してない・・・。カッパドキアに来るんじゃなかった、と思わずにはいられなかった。
But upon taking in the sights in the area, all doubts will vanish. The formations and the caves made therein really are impressive. You can do all of the outdoor stuff in a day-we did it by a rented motorcycle, and it was terrific.
でも、ギョレメとその周辺を見て回ったら、そんな気持ちも吹っ飛んでしまった。奇妙な形をした石と、その中をくりぬいた住居跡は、本当に面白い。比較的暖かい日中、私たちはオフロードバイクを借りて観光してまわったけれど、これがすごく楽しかった。

Since there is less than nothing to do in the town, we decided to leave the next night with another trying night bus, but not before using the final day to take in one of the famous underground cities, Kaymakli. The entry fee is a steep 15 Lira, but worth it. On the other hand, can’t really recommend it for the claustrophobic or for those with bad cases of asthma.
でも、ギョレメの町では石を見る以外にやることもないので、2日目の夜には夜行で次の目的地に向かうことにした。でもその前に、カイマクルにある、有名な地下都市を見に出かけた。入場料はなんと15リラ（約16ドル）とものすごく高かったけれど、5階分もある地下に掘られたその都市は、15リラの価値はあったと思う。まるで人間サイズのアリの巣ともいうべき地下都市は、迷路のようで、本当によく作ったなあと感嘆。あ、でも、ひどい喘息持ちの人や、閉所恐怖症の人は行かないほうがいいかも。

And with that and another sleepless night on a Turkish night bus we were off to Syria. First stop: Aleppo.
カッパドキアから再び夜行バスに乗り込み、次に目指すはシリアのアレッポ。こちらのバスも座席が狭く、眠れない一夜を過ごした。
