With our thoughts still firmly with Japan after our temporary return, we made our way back to Istanbul to continue the trip. In Japan we were of course able to enjoy excellent food, meet up with friends and family, and in general just have a great time. And because of that we had lost much of the motivation we had for the world trip in the first place-going home, even for a little bit was dangerous. Somehow though we conjured up the necessary strength to continue.
楽しかった一時帰国の思い出に浸りながら、またまたイスタンブールにやってきた。一時帰国中は、毎日のようにおいしい日本食を楽しみ、友達や家族と再会し、とにかく楽しいことばかり。おかげで完全に旅へのモチベーションが落ちてしまった。いっそこのまま日本にとどまろうかと思ってしまったけれど、ここで旅を中断する訳にはいかないとなんとか気持ちを奮い立たせ、後ろ髪ひかれつつイスタンブールに戻ってきた。

Besides just for reasons of constancy, it was also necessary to come to Istanbul to get visas for the next country on our list, Syria. Thing is, while Japanese persons can get a Syrian visa from the Syrian consulate in Tokyo within one week, we found out the hard way that it is a different story for non-Japanese-like Dan. For Dan (and strangely also for Esshie by virtue, apparently, of marriage), it would take at least one week, if not a month. Bottom line: they don’t even know by when (or if) the visa will be issued in the case of foreigners. While we had no hard first-hand information, we had some reports that visas could be obtained by foreigners in Istanbul, and so headed there, on a wing and a prayer, as it were. Turns out we were right. Indeed, in Istanbul our visas were ISSUED ON THE DAY OF APPLICATION!
今回のイスタンブール滞在中、次の目的国シリアのビザを取らなくてはいけない。六本木にある在日シリア領事館でも日本人は申請後１週間でビザをもらえるけど、ダンが日本国籍ではなかったので、１週間以上、しかもいつ発給できるかわからないと言われ、結局とれずじまいだった。で、イスタンブールでビザがとれるかどうか明確な情報も見つけられないままイスタンブールで申請してみたら、なんと申請日と同日にすんなりビザが下りて驚いた。
＊Since there are not a few travelers who wish to head to Syria from Turkey, we wish to report on the situation at the Syrian consulate at the time of our application. Application time is 09:30~11:30, and pickup time is 15:00~16:00 that day. What you need: (1) one application form (these are at the window; pick one up there and there is a place to fill it in to your left; (2) unless you are a resident of Turkey, a recommendation letter from your consulate (this
might be costly, depending on your nationality-was free for Esshie, but a dear 50 dollars or so for Dan); (3) 2 photos; and (4) the fee (here again some variation, though the theme was the same-Esshie: 20 Euro; Dan: 45 Euro!
However, visas are also available at the Turkey-Syria border. And this is so even for those nationalities having a Syrian embassy in their home country (despite there being a sign in the visa hall explicitly to the contrary). We know this because there was on the bus with us from Antakya, Turkey to Aleppo a Japanese man who got a visa at the border. And it took only a little while longer (15~20 minutes) than it did for us-not the 6~8 hours often reported on the ‘net. Go figure.
＊トルコからシリアを目指す旅行者は多いので、参考までに当時の情報を書いておきます。 在イスタンブールのシリア領事館では、午前中9:30～11:00が申請時間、午後15:00～16:00が受取り時間。申請時に必要なものは、(1)申請書1通（窓口にあるのでその場で記入）、(2)トルコ在住でない場合は自国の領事館に発行してもらった添え状１通（日本領事館では無料で即時発行、カナダ領事館は50カナダドルで即時発行でした）、(3)証明写真2枚、(4)ビザ料金（日本人は20ユーロ、カナダ人は45ユーロ）、そしてパスポート。窓口で申請すると、代金が記載された紙切れをもらうので、それを持ってすぐ隣のビルにある銀行で料金を振込む（ユーロ、新トルコリラ、どちらでもOKでした）。銀行で振込みの領収書をもらって再びシリア領事館の窓口に戻り、領収書を渡すと、引き換え券のような紙切れを渡されます。あとは午後の受け取り時間に領事館に戻り、窓口に引き換え券を出せば、ビザを貰える、という流れでした。
ただ、トルコ－シリア国境（アンタキヤ～アレッポ）でもビザは発給されるようです。国境の入管オフィスには、「自国にシリア大使館がない国籍の人のみ国境でビザを発給する」と書いていたけれど、実際は自国にシリア大使館ある国籍の人でも大丈夫だったよう。なぜかというと、トルコのアンタキヤから同じバスに乗っていた日本人男性はシリアビザを持っていなかったのに、国境でものの20分くらいで問題なくビザをもらえていたから。ネットで調べると、ビザなしで国境に行くとビザ発給に6～8時間かかる、と書いていたけど、実際は違うようです。
With our Syrian visas in hand (much sooner and easier than we were expecting), we made quickly for the next night bus out of Istanbul. For us the only really outstanding thing about Istanbul is the prices. But we wanted to make at least one stop before leaving Turkey-the mysterious landscapes of Cappadocia!
さて、無事シリアビザも取ったので、もうイスタンブールに用はない。早速次の日の夜行バスで、奇石群で有名なカッパドキアへと向かった。
