Thanks to our crazy stay of more than two weeks in Tashkent, there wasn’t much time left for taking in the sights of the rest of the country. In fact, that plus the fact that we had already had it up to here with Central Asia meant that we restricted ourselves to the two most obvious places: Samarkand and Bukhara.
ビザ待ちのために約3週間もタシュケントで使ってしまったので、ウズべキスタンの他の地域を見て回る時間があまり残っていなかった。実際、この時点ですでに中央アジアはお腹いっぱいだったので、ウズベキスタン観光地としては一番の有名どころのサマルカンドとブハラだけおさえておくことにした。
The main attraction in Samarkand is the Registan: a collection of madrasahs dating 15th to 17th centuries. They really are quite impressive, as can be seen from the pics. But we didn’t find the steep entrance fee worth it at all-inside of the walls are housed nothing but tacky souvenir shops. Samarkand is also home to the huge Bibi-Khanym Mosque. This is also impressive, but a complete reconstruction. Lastly, there is a good bazaar here, but at the same time there is also nothing particularly distinctive about it. In short, we spent three long, hot days here and came away with little other than the feeling that one day would have been more than sufficient.
サマルカンドの一番の見どころは15～17世紀のマドラセ（神学校）が集まる「レギスタン」。写真のとおり大きくてキレイで見応えは十分。でも入場料が高すぎる！素晴らしい外観のマドラセは、期待して中に入ってみれば観光客目当てのお土産屋さんが並んでいるだけでがっかり。ここは入場料払わずに外からだけでも十分堪能できます。ちなみに、ここでは警察官が「メナーレ（尖塔）、4000スム（約4ドル）デノボラナイ？ケシキスゴイヨ～。スゴイヨ～」と日本語で言ってきて面白い。お前はそれでも警察か！と突っ込みたくなったけど。サマルカンドには他にも巨大なビビ・カーンモスクがあって、こちらも壮大で素晴らしい。ただ、完全に修復されていて元の姿ではないので残念。バザールも面白かったけれど、中央アジアによくある類のバザールで特別何があるわけでもなかった。結局、暑～いサマルカンドで3日間過ごした私達。サマルカンドは1日で十分です。

We found Bukhara to be more of the same. It is true that its centre is more lived-in and the sights better preserved than Samarkand, but really the architectural sights appear nothing more that covers for souvenir hawking. Throw this in with the fact that the town is in full tourist more with prices 3-4 times normal and we found it hard to see the attraction. Whilst two weeks is excessive, Tashkent is much more interesting than either Samarkand or Bukhara-at least for us. By the by, the summer heat is no laughing matter in Bukhara. Indeed, we found it even hotter than the killer heat we experienced this may in India; after only 10 minutes walking in the afternoon sun, you feel consciousness beginning to slip away-it is that hot.
ブハラもサマルカンドと似たような観光地。確かに、ブカラはサマルカンドよりは風情があるし建築物の保存状態もいいけれど、中に入ってみればやっぱりお土産屋さんばっかりでがっかり…。観光の中心である旧市街は観光客だらけで、店では値段が通常の3～4倍だし、あまりに観光地化しすぎていて感動も薄かった。タシュケントの滞在は2週間以上と長すぎたけれど、少なくとも私たちにとってはタシュケントの方がサマルカンドやブハラより面白みがありました。ちなみに、ブカラの夏は半端なく暑いです。インドでも死ぬほど暑かったけど、それを超える暑さ。日なたを10分くらい歩くと意識が朦朧としてきます。

Even hotter than it looks–trust me/あぁ、影がない、どうすればいいだろう？
Whilst still on Bukhara, we should mention that we did have the good fortune to stumble across a real, local bread (nan) bakery in the old town. The owner was nice enough to ask our gawking selves in and show us the facilities. There we were able to witness the birth in five minutes of piping hot nan from the oven from a round piece of dough-a process involving the skilled concert of four people. We bought two, and man were they good-much better than the petrified stuff you usually get in the cafes here. The shop is hard to miss: there is a nan nailed over the doorway. If in Bukhara, do look for it in the old town. Much more interesting in the end than all of the “attractions”.
そういえば、旧市街の奥まったところで地元のパン（ナーン）屋さんを偶然発見。覗きこむと中に招き入れてくれて、工房を見せてもらいました。4人の素晴らしい連携プレーで、丸い形に整えられたナーンの生地が大きなオーブンの中に次々と入れられ、5分後には焼き立てナーンの出来上がり。2つ買って食べたけど、出来たてはやっぱりうまい！門にナーンがひっかけてあればそこはナーン工房なので、ブハラに行ったら探してみてください。歴史的建造物の見学より面白いですよ。

One other tip for those intent on going to Bukhara: although the Ark is open until 6, if you are thinking of going late to beat the heat, make sure you get there before 4:30, because this is when the museums within the Ark close. If note, you will end up, as we did, looking at empty rooms. Fun.
ブハラに行こうと思っている方へもう一つアドバイス。アークの閉館時間は午後6時となっていますが、暑さを避けるために遅めに行こうと考えているあなた、少なくとも中の博物館が閉まる4時半までには行きましょう。私達のように4時半を過ぎていくと、ただ空っぽの部屋しか見るものがありません。
