Zhezkazgan is an industrial city on the end of the trunk line west of Karaganda. We chose it only because from here we believed that we could catch a bus going south west to Kyzylorda, where we could again take the train further south.
カラガンダの西側にあるジェズカズガンは、鉄道がぷっつりと途切れる工業都市。なぜここにやって来たかというと、ジェズカズガンから、さらに南西にあるキジローダ行きのバスが出ていると聞いたから。そしてキジローダから鉄道で南下しようと考えたから。
Luckily, there is a “bus” to Kyzylorda, but it runs every day except Tuesday and since we arrived on a Tuesday, we had to overnight in Zhezkazgan. While our guidebook contained no information about the city, we found it pleasant enough. One thing though: it was only after checking into the somewhat expensive “Samsung” hotel (5,000 for a double) on the outskirts, that we realized that there is a bus station “hotel” on the second floor of the bus station. Too bad, too, because it is only 700 for a rest (this apparently means that until nighttime, because we were quoted 1,400 for a bed until the morning). Kal took the risk of not checking into the Samsung and so was fortunate enough to stay here (though he declined the offer for a “girl” from the babushka running the hotel).
ジェズカズガン発キジローダ行きのバスは実際にあるらしい。よかった-。でも、そのバスは火曜日だけ無く、私達がジェズカズガンに到着したのはちょうど火曜日だったので、ここで一泊せざるをえなくなった。ロンリープラット（ガイドブック）にはこの街の情報は全く載っていなかったけれど、それなりに居心地は良い街。私達が郊外にあるちょっと高めの「サムソンホテル」（ダブルルーム：5000テンゲ）にチェックインした後、バスターミナルの2階に安い宿舎があったことに気付く。休憩が1日1人700テンゲ（でも一泊すると「2日」とカウントされ、1400テンゲになる）。一緒に来ていた韓国人のカルさんは、サムソンホテルにチェックインしなかったので、後から見つけたこの宿に泊まることに。（そう言えば、カルさんはこの宿舎のオバチャンから「あんた、部屋だけじゃなくて女の子も手配しようか？」と言われたらしい。彼はその申し出を断ったそうでございます。）
After parting with Kal, we left for the Samsung by a city bus. Unfortunately, Dan was accosted by some drunken Kazakh on the bus. Seemed like he was speaking Russian, so Dan uttered some broken “I don’t speak Russian”, and headed for the back. Buddy apparently wasn’t satisfied or didn’t realize what Dan was saying because he continued on in a very load voice and even tried to hit Dan. The guy was piss drunk and his friend was holding him back so there was no way he could have actually hit Dan, but he sure did think Dan was Russian and had it in for him for that reason-we think because while keeping his pathetic drunk, tough guy eye on Dan he kept saying “Russian guy….#&%&%” or something. Also, the other people on the bus, Russian and Kazakh, took obvious offence at what buddy was blathering about. Bad for buddy, because when he finally alighted a large group of Russians followed him off the bus. Can imagine what happened to buddy. Oh well, couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. And as for bad blood between the Kazakhs and Russians-it’s for real.
夜、バスターミナルの宿に泊まるカルさんと別れ、ホテルに戻ろうと市内バスに乗り込んだとき、ダンがカザフ系の男性から声をかけられた。ロシア語 だったので「ごめんなさい、ロシア語わからないんです」と言って奥に進もうとすると、その男性がダンに対して大きい声を出し、さらにものすごい勢いで殴りかかってきた！よく見ればかなり酔っぱらっていて、隣に座っていた彼の友達がかろうじて止めてくれたので、ダンが殴られることはなかったけれど、どうもダンをロシア人と勘違いしているらしい。私達が奥の方に移動した後も、ずっと憎しみのこもった眼でダンを睨みつけながら「ロシア人め・・・、ＸＸＸＸＸＸ」と、車内全体に響き渡る大声で（おそらく）ロシア人の悪口をまくし立てていた。それを聞いていた他の乗客の中には、勿論ロシア系もカザフ系もいるわけで、見回せばみんな苦い顔。しばらくして友達に引きずられながらおっさんがバスを降りると、ロシア系の男性たちもどっと降りていき、そのおじさんの方に詰め寄っていくのが見えた。よっぽど酷い悪口だったみたい。あの後おじさんはロシア人たちに袋叩きにされたんだろうか・・・。とにかく何の関係もない私達にはとんだ災難でした。やっぱりカザフ系とロシア系との間には確執があるようです。

Next day the bus, and the thing about the bus, though, is that it is really more of a large, Soviet-era jeep. And we found out quickly why. The “road” to Kyzylorda is little more than a path: those lucky enough to get seats (or some portion of one) are often thrown completely out of them. Add to that the desire of everyone to bring along the kitchen sink with them and the desert heat, and you have quite an interesting experience-an 8 hour one. If you take this bus, bring lots of water because while the bus does make “stops”, these are only out in the desert and at some family’s yurt for lunch.
翌日乗りこんだキジローダ行きのバスは、ソ連時代の巨大なジープと言った方がよさそうな代物。出発してみてわかったけれど、キジローダまでの道はもはや道とは呼べないほどひどい状態。普通のバスじゃたちまちバラバラになってしまいそう。車内は信じられない混みようで、お尻半分でも座れたらラッキー。でも道が悪く、常に全員が宙を舞っておりました。人間だけでなく、大量の荷物を車内に積め込んだ状態（荷台は無し）で、ジリジリと暑い砂漠の中を8時間。外は砂漠なので砂埃がひどく、窓は閉められたまま。途中、何度か休憩があるけれど、砂漠のど真ん中でのトイレ休憩か、砂漠の中にポツンとある家族経営の食堂のみ。このバスに乗る機会があれば、十分な飲料水を準備しましょう。

We made it alive and almost in one whole piece to Kyzylorda. Although Kyzylorda was briefly the capital of the then Kazak Soviet Republic, it is really quite small and we used it only as an overnight stop on the way to Turkistan. One thing, there is a good and cheap train station “hotel” here (one bed 1,500): as you walk out of the station it is the next building on the left, on the third floor.
なんとか生きてキジローダに到着。キジローダは、カザフスタンがソ連の共産国だった頃、何年間か首都だったらしいけれど、こぢんまりとした街。私達は次の目的地、トルキスタンへの通過点として1泊したのみ。キジローダ駅には安い「ホテル」（1ベッド1500テンゲ）がある。駅舎を出てすぐ左側の隣のビルの3階にあります。お試しあれ。
