The first thing you think of when leave the Almaty 2 train station and head down the main street is how much the city looks like a European city. The streets are all tree-lined, you are tripping over out-door cafes and bars, most of the people are dressed to the nines, and there is an overall air of affluence to the place. Speaking of affluence, we have none of it, but were lucky enough to be offered a ride to the place where we were going to stay by a Chinese man of Kazak origin whom we met on our train from Urumqi. The place we were planning to stay was a dormitory, the “Third Dormitory”, in a university. Why a dorm? Because Almaty is expensive, ridiculously expensive, that’s why. There’s no McDonald’s in Kazakhstan, so we can’t do a Big Mac index, but we can say that an Americano with milk will run you over 4 dollars.
アルマトイⅡ駅を出て大通りに出ると、なんだかヨーロッパの街に来たような錯覚に。並木道には屋外カフェやバーが並んでいて、華やかな服装の人たちが歩き、街全体が裕福な雰囲気につつまれている。裕福さとは無縁の私達だったけど、ウルムチ発の国際電車で同じコンパートメントになったカザフ系中国人が、彼を迎えにきた友達の車で宿まで連れて行ってくれたのはとってもラッキーだった。最初は「Third Dormitory（第3寮）」という、大学の寮に泊まる予定だった。なぜ寮かというと、アルマトイはとにかく信じられないくらい物価が高いから。カザフスタンにはマクドナルドがないので、「ビックマック指標」では物価の高さをお伝えできないが、たとえば、アメリカンコーヒーにミルク付けるとなんと一杯4ドル以上！日本と変わりません。

That said, the dorm was cheap: 2,500 Tenge (like 20 bucks) for two, but it was positively revolting: there were no sheets and just the look of the washroom made us queasy. We decided to look at the next cheapest place, the nearby Hotel Saulet at 187 Furmanov. This hotel is more expensive (4,000 Tenge for a double), but in terms of value it beats the “Third Dormitory” by miles. The doubles are spacious with phone, TV, a fridge, and a balcony to boot. Showers cost 100 Tenge, but the floor maid is very attentive. If you are thinking of staying at the “Third Dormitory”, our advice is to check whether the Saulet has rooms first.
とは言っても、寮の値段は安くて、ツインの部屋が2500テンゲ（約20ドル）。しかし、不潔度満点。ベッドにはシーツもなく、トイレ・シャワーは見るだけで厳しい。ということで、「第3寮」に泊まることはやめて、次に安いホテルを見てみることに。そのホテルが、その寮の近くにある「サウレットホテル」。寮に比べれば高いけど（ダブルルーム4000テンゲ：約35ドル）、その価値は寮よりはるかに高い。私達が泊まったダブルルームは広くて、トイレ、電話、テレビ、冷蔵庫、バルコニーまで付いている。シャワーは別途100テンゲかかるけど、ハウスキーピングの女性たちは愛想
がよく気配り上手でなかなかよし。もしアルマトイで「第3寮」に泊まりたければ、まずサウレットホテルの部屋が空いているか確認することをお勧めします。
The first thing we had to do in Almaty was not check the sights, but rather register ourselves with the migration police. Our guide book, Lonely Planet’s “Central Asia”, says that this is generally not necessary for foreigners from developed nations, but it was for Dan and all the other foreigners we met in Kazakhstan (except Japanese). More, registration is not free, but costs about 8 bucks. Took us a few hours to figure out what to do at the migration office and to get registered. There is precisely zero English and the patience of a saint to wait in line while gaggles of old women brazenly cut in front of you. Shades of Russia.
アルマトイについて最初にやるべきことは、名所巡りではなく、移民警察局での外国人登録。私達のガイドブック「ロンリープラネット・中央アジア版」には先進国の旅行者は登録する必要はないと書いてあるが、ダンや、カザフスタンで会った外国人旅行者は全員登録が必要だった（日本人は登録必要ないようです）。登録費は有料だけど、わずか8ドル。途中、道に迷ってしまい、移民警察局に着いて登録手続きが終わるまでに何時間もかかってしまった。局内は英語を話す人はゼロ。しかも、長い列で待っているところに、おばちゃんが平気な顔で割りこんでくるので、ものすごく忍耐力がいる。数年前のロシア旅行を思い出すなぁ・・・。
Not knowing exactly what to do next, we took it easy for a few days here. And that’s an easy thing to do since Almaty has all the amenities that you would expect in a similarly sized European city. We were also fortunate enough to cross paths here again with a Korean man, Kal, whom we first met on the train from Urumqi. Kal speaks about a billion languages and was in Kazakhstan looking for a university at which to study yet another: Russian. Needless to say we shamelessly latched on to Kal and he was nice enough to help us out with the language barrier. Kal soon left for the north though, and we had to decide what to do. Dan was intent on renting a motorcycle from what is apparently the only place that you can do so in Kazakhstan, Silk Offroad (Site) at 29/1 Satpaev, Almaty. But after walking all the way to the place we were met by a shuttered shop. Turns out though that the owner was on tour at the time, so if you are interested in renting a bike in Kazakhstan make sure that you contact Silk Offroad well in advance.
外国人登録を終え、アルマトイでは何すればいいのかわからず、数日間のんびり過ごした。アルマトイではヨーロッパの街のような快適さがあり、のんびりするには格好の場所。ウルムチで出会った韓国人のカルさんと街で遭遇したのはラッキーだった。色々な言語を話せるカルさんは、今度はロシア語を勉強するためにカザフスタンの大学を見て回る途中だった。ロシア語のできない私達は、図々しくもカルさんにいろいろ助けてもらった。そのカルさんも、すぐにカザフスタン北部に旅立っていってしまい、私達も次の行動を考えなければならなくなった。ダンは、カザフスタンで唯一のレンタルバイク屋、「Silk Offroad」でバイクを借りようと考えていた。しかし、1日中歩きまわってやっと辿り着いたその店はなんと閉店・・・。ダンはかなりショックを受けていた。諦めきれずにメールで問い合わせると、その日は店のオーナーがバイクツアーに出ていて不在にしていたとのこと。もしカザフスタンでのレンタルバイクに興味があれば、前もってSilk Offroadへ連絡しましょう。
Without a plan, we decided that we shouldn’t travel Kazakhstan without seeing the relatively new capital, Astana, and so headed north hoping that we might find some cheap place to stay in the only place in Kazakhstan that manages somehow to be more expensive than Almaty.
特に次の計画もないけれど、新しいカザフスタンの首都、アスタナは見とかなきゃということで、アルマトイよりも物価が高いと言われる首都アスタナ目指して、安い宿があることを願いつつ北に向かった。
