Amritsar is the major Indian town near the border (Attari) with Pakistan (Wagah). It is also the seat of the Golden Temple, the most holy temple for Sikhs in India.
アムリトサルは、インド（アタリ村）とパキスタン（ワガ村）の国境に程近い大きな街。また、インドのシーク教徒にとって最も聖なる寺、「ゴールデン・テンプル（黄金寺）」もアムリトサルにある。
The Golden Temple is an amazing place. It consists of a golden temple where worshippers line up in the extreme heat to pay alms surrounded by an enormous pool used for bathing. The temple is the centre of the chaotic old city, and while many of the budget hotels are also in this area, it is not an easy place to stay as the narrow roadways are constantly chockfull of pilgrims. More, since it is a holy site, all of the restaurants are limited in the kinds of food they can offer. Indeed, let alone any kind of meat, not even eggs are served here.
ゴールデン・テンプルの境内は精神的な雰囲気。沐浴のための巨大な池に囲まれた黄金の寺には、酷暑の中、巡礼者達がお布施を手に並んでいる。ゴールデン・テンプルは、混沌とした旧市街のど真ん中にあり、安宿もこの辺りに多いが、細い路地は常に巡礼者で溢れているため、あまり快適な宿泊場所とは言えない。しかも、このエリアは聖なる地であるため、レストランのメニューがかなり限られている。肉だけでなく、卵さえ食べられないのだ。

For these reasons after staying one night in the old city we moved to a hotel near the train station that even had a bar attached to it for a little bit more money: 1000 Rupees as opposed to about 500 in the old city. It was worth it.
ということで、旧市街に1泊した後、アムリトサル駅に近いホテルに移動した。少し高めだが、なんとバーまで付いているホテルだ。旧市街で約500ルピー支払うなら、バー付きホテルに1000ルピー払った方がいい。
We also took a day trip to the border (Attari-Wagah) for the famous border-closing ceremony performed by Indian and Pakistani ceremonial guards. It was quite the show, too. The ceremony itself is only about 20 minutes, but for 1 or 2 hours prior to the show the crowd is whipped up into a frenzy by nationalistic tunes (blared on both sides) to such an extent that impromptu dancing breaks out every so often. Good thing for foreigners (at least on the Indian side) is that VIP seating is available. A tip though, if you go, make sure you take the VIP seating closest to the actual border gate, because that is where all of the good action (the interaction between the Pakistani and Indian guards) takes place.
毎日インドとパキスタンの衛兵によって行われる国境ゲート閉鎖式を見るため、アムリトサルから国境の村アタリにも足を伸ばした。この式がなかなか面白い。式自体はわずか20分間だが、その1～2時間前から両国側で自国の音楽が大音量で流れ、それにのって観衆は大興奮状態。前に飛び出して踊り出す人までいた。外国人は（少なくともインド側では）VIP席に座らせてもらえる。席選びのコツだが、国境ゲートになるべく近い場所に座る場所を確保したほうがいい。なぜなら一番面白い部分（インドとパキスタンの衛兵とが交わる部分）は国境ゲートで行われるからだ。
The next day we left Amritsar for Attari to cross the border, and what a difference. There was almost nobody around, making the 100-200 meter crossing though no man’s land quite surreal. Upon arrival at Pakistani immigration and customs we were quite nervous and knew not what to expect, but within only a few minutes we were feeling quite good about coming to Pakistan. Everyone was so welcoming and helpful.
翌日、アムリトサルから再度アタリ村に移動。今度は国境を越えてパキスタンに入るためだ。国境地点には、前日のセレモニーの時とは打って変わってほとんど人がいなかったので、100～200メートルの緩衝地帯を歩くのはなんとも超現実的な体験だった。国境ゲートを通過してパキスタン側の入管・税関オフィスに到着したときは、さあこれから何が起こるの？とかなり緊張していたが、職員は全員歓迎の意を表し、親切にいろいろと教えてくれたりしたので、ものの数分後にはパキスタンに来てよかった～と感じていた。

Indeed, we were even able to sell our Lonely Planet India guidebook for a good price to a very congenial and knowledgeable fellow who runs an outdoor bookstand right outside of Pakistan immigration near the bus stand that takes passengers to Lahore. With that we boarded the bus and were looking forward to Lahore.
パキスタン側の入管オフィスを出ると、ラホール行きバスが来るバススタンドがあり、その近くにある本屋では、とても優しくて物知りのオーナーが我々のインドのガイドブックを良い値段で買ってくれた。ラホール滞在を楽しみに、我々はラホール行きのバスに乗り込んだ。
