Mumbai is India’s financial and entertainment capital. And despite leaving Goa, we were looking forward to our visit to this sea-side metropolis.
ムンバイはインドの金融＆芸能業界の中心。泣く泣くゴアを離れたものの、この海に面した大都市への訪問は楽しみにしていた。
We arrived late at night, which is contrary to our usual practice of arriving early in the morning. This is because we wanted to take a day train to be able to enjoy the scenery between Goa and Mumbai. The scenery alone is worth it, but another good point is that it was not blazing hot upon arrival. We arrived at the famous CST railway station (better known by its old moniker, Victoria Terminus). As the old name suggests, this station was built in the late 19th Century, and it is a marvel of colonial neo-gothic architecture. It is even a Unesco World Heritage site. On top of this, Lonely Planet even goes so far as to claim that it is the “busiest train station in Asia”, but we are pretty sure that title rests comfortably with Shinjuku Station in Tokyo. Nice try though.
いつもは新しい目的地には朝早く到着するようにしているが、今回はそのならわしに反して夜遅く到着。ゴアからムンバイまでの素晴らしい車窓を楽しむため、日中の電車に乗りたかったからだ。景色でだけでもその電車に乗った価値はあったが、夜到着したので強烈な暑さもなくて良かった。到着駅は有名なCST駅（旧名ビクトリア・ターミナルとして良く知られている）。旧名からわかるように、この駅は19世紀に建てられたもので、植民地時代の新ゴシック様式の驚異だ。ユネスコの世界遺産にも登録されている。ロンリープラネット（我々のガイドブック）は、CST駅を「アジアで最も利用客の多い駅」と謳っているが、東京の新宿駅の方がよっぽどその呼び名にふさわしいと思う。とはいってもCSTも巨大な駅であることは確かだ。

Our hotel was not far from VT, in the “Fort Area”. This area is to the north of the more popular “Colaba” area, which is overflowing with tourists, but Fort has all the amenities you need and we suspect that the clean, well serviced hotel (with cable TV and attached bath) we stayed at, Hotel Oasis, would at 1,340 Rupees be a hard find in Colaba.
宿はCST駅の近くの「フォート地区」にあるホテル。もっと人気があり、旅行者で溢れている「コルバ地区」の北にある。しかし「フォート地区」にも必要なものは揃っているし、我々が泊まったホテル「Hotel Oasis」のように、清潔でサービスも良くて（しかもケーブルTVとバスルーム付きで）1340ルピー（約3400円）のホテルは、コルバ地区にはなかなかないはず。
Indeed, on the sights side of things, whilst Colaba boasts all of the street stall, market, and bar action as well as the Gateway of India, it is a walkable distance from Fort. The Gateway of India, is a kind of colonial triumphial arch meant to commemorate King George V’s landing in India. It’s cool enough, but it was in the midst of some renovation work whilst we were there. Speaking of the Gateway, from the jetties here we caught a boat for the so-called Elephant Island featuring cave-temples artistically cut out of the rock face. The temples are about 1,500 years old and make the one hour crossing (one-way) well worth it.
確かに、見所的にはコルバ地区には露店の並ぶマーケットや、バーもあるし、それに有名な「インド門」もコルバ地区にある。でもフォート地区からコルバ地区までは歩こうと思えば歩ける距離。ちなみに、インド門は大英帝国のジョージ5世のインド上陸を記念して建てられた植民地時代の凱旋門のようなもの。すばらしい建築物だが、我々が訪れた時は残念ながら修復工事中だった。インド門と言えば、そのすぐ横の防波堤から船に乗ってエレファンタ島にも行ってきた。エレファンタ島は、岩石を掘って作った洞窟内のお寺で有名。このお寺は約1500年前に造られたもので、片道1時間かけて海を渡って見に行くだけの価値はある。

Buildings of historical and architectural interest from the era of the British Raj abound in Mumbai. Two notables aside from Victoria Terminus are the High Court and Mumbai University. We visited both, since they are conveniently right next to each other. The university was nice to look at, but we had the most fun at the High Court, because we were lucky enough to be able to find and sit in on argument concerning an appeal in a civil matter. For the lawyers and the judges being able to work in such beautiful surroundings is really a privilege. That said, it must also be quite difficult, given that there is no air conditioning.
ムンバイには、英国統治時代に造られた、歴史的にも建築物としても興味深い建物が多い。CST駅以外にも、高等裁判所とムンバイ大学は特に素晴らしい。この2つの建物は隣同志にあるので、両方とも見学した。ムンバイ大学もなかなか良かったが、民事訴訟裁判を見学することができた高等裁判所の方が面白かった（ちなみに裁判所内は撮影禁止。残念）。あの晴らしい環境で仕事ができるのは、弁護士や裁判官にとっては大きな特権だ。ただ、エアコンがないので、暑くて結構大変そうだったが…。
That’s really it for Mumbai. We were tempted to go to see a movie in Mumbai, what with it being Bollywood and all, but I wasn’t thrilled about seeing a movie in a language I didn’t understand, and so we put it off. While some Bollywood productions are in English, we unfortunately could not find a theatre playing any such movie. As seeing a movie theatre in a nice, air-conditioned theatre was not on, we pretty much kept a low profile in Fort until our departure for Delhi. It was just too hot.
ムンバイはこれくらい。何といってもムンバイはボリウッドの中心地。映画も観に行こうかと思ったが、理解できない言語で映画は見たくなかったので、とりあえずやめた。ボリウッド映画は一部英語で制作されているが、残念ながら英語のボリウッド映画を上映している映画館を見つけることができなかった。エアコンの効いた涼しい映画館の中での映画鑑賞はなかったので、デリーへ出発するまでフォート地区で地味に過ごした。とにかく暑すぎてあまり行動できないのだ。
Maybe Delhi will be cooler…we hoped.
デリーがもっと涼しかったらいいな・・・。
