Hyderabad, or, as it is better known in India in the right circles owing to its booming IT industry, “Cyberabad” brought to our minds images of a cutting edge, ultra-modern city. This is perhaps why we thought that the bus driver had made a mistake when he dropped us, because we were greeted by all the usual chaos that defines most of India’s “real” cities, including the mandatory “Hello! Auto rickshaw?” from the taxi drivers who converged upon our backpack-laden selves immediately upon alighting from the bus.
ハイデラバードはIT業界が盛んな都市で、別名「サイデラバード」とも呼ばれているとか。なんとなく洗練された都市をイメージしていたが、長距離バスを降りたハイドラバード駅（別名ナンパリー駅）前は、やはりインドならではの混沌とした雰囲気。大きなバックパックを抱えた私達を見て、さっそくオートの運転手から声がかかる。これも他のインドの地域と同じ。うーん残念。
After a bit, we were able to discover the other side of Hyderabad-the Muslim quarter. This is an area chockfull of historical buildings and a wonderful bazaar, where Islamic culture thrives. The focal point is the Charminar, a tower structure having a mosque that was built in 1591 to commemorate the establishment of Hyderabad. Next to the Charminar is the famous Laad Bazaar. This bazaar is comprised chiefly of Muslim traders dealing in textiles and
jewelry, and, for a moment, it is easy to forget you are in India and not Arabia. The typical scene is of countless shops of accessories, sarees, and salwar kameez (dress for women) and gaggles of happy-go-lucky shoppers, most of them Muslim women clad head-to-toe in black. Cutting though the back alleys, we were able to witness the many tailors at work on all kinds of fabrics. It’s great because nobody’s pushy and all welcome you to watch them work. Very cool.
しかし数日間の滞在で、ハイドラバードには別の顔もあることがわかった。歴史的にイスラム教・イスラム文化が色濃く残っていて、今でもインドの中では比較的保守的な都市なのだ。街中にも1591年に造られたイスラム建築チャールミナール（塔門）や大きなモスクなど、イスラム色が目立つ。またチャールミナール周辺にあるバザールは、もはやインドではなく、まるでアラブの街に迷い込んだような不思議な雰囲気。バザールには、奇麗なアクセサリー、サリーやシャルワール・カミーズ（女性用のゆったりしたシャツとズボン）の店がずらりと並んでいて、黒い装束に身を包んだイスラム女性たちが買い物を楽しんでいる。裏道に入ると、刺しゅう職人が色とりどりの布地に刺しゅうを施している様子も見学できる。

By way of nothing, we are big fans of biryani, which is basically a kind of dry curry featuring vegetables, chicken, mutton, etc. Actually, according to one Indian guy we ran into, Hyderabad is the apparent birthplace of biryani. Whatever the case, if you come to Hyderabad, you just have to try biryani. To this end, we visited a place, Hotel Shadab, recommended by Lonely Planet for biryani. Esshie had the chicken and Dan the mutton, and man it was good! Not only that, the portions were very generous. The place is very popular and happening. More, an order from the menu board arrives right after your ordered drinks (usually in India your food takes forever and comes only after you have finished your drink). Kind of like a BLT at the local café. And if you are still feeling parched or in need of something sweet, look no further than the busy Lassi stand right in front of Hotel Shadab. Very good Lassis here, very sweet-Lassis in Hyderabad usually contain ice-cream, a nice touch.
ちなみに、私達が大好きなインド料理にブリアーニがある。簡単に言えばドライカレーのような食べ物で、ベジタブルブリアーニ、チキンブリアーニ、マトンブリアーニなど種類も色々。どこかで会ったインド人が、ハイデラバードはブリアーニ発祥の地だと言っていた。ここに来たからにはブリアーニを食べないわけにはいかない。ということでロンリープラネット（私達のガイドブック）がお勧めするレストランHotel Shadabまで足を運んだ。私はチキンブリアーニ、ダンはマトンブリアーニを注文したが、どちらも本当に美味！ご飯の中に埋もれたチキンとマトンの量も半端ではない。人気の店らしく、とても活気がある。ブリアーニは店の看板メニューで注文してからすぐに出てくる。まるで日本の人気ラーメン店のような雰囲気だ。店の入口にはラッシーのスタンドもあり、そちらも賑わっていた。ちなみにハイデラバードのラッシーにはアイスクリームが浮いていて、とっても甘い！
Sorry to harp about the heat again, but it was only mid-April and already a 10 minute walk outside borders on the unbearable with your throat feeling like sandpaper and your shirt sticking to you courtesy of your own sweat. So again, while there was much to see and do, we kept ourselves confined to our room most of the day and ventured out only at night.
4月中旬のインドはとにかく暑い。外を10分も歩けばもう喉はカラカラ、シャツは汗でぐっしょり。なので、昼間は出来るだけホテルの部屋で過ごし、夕方から出かけるようにした。
Next sun, sand, surf-Goa’s beaches! Can’t wait!
次は待ちに待ったゴア！！！あああ…早くビーチでのんびりしたい…。
