Visakhapatnam, it’s a mouthful for sure, but mercifully everyone refers to it simply as “Vizag”. Vizag itself has a beach, but it’s not really for swimming-the “boardwalk” is what’s popular here, and with good reason as it is quite lively. There are cheap places to stay near the centre of town, but Vizag (1.5 million) is no Puri and we felt it worth the few extra Rupees to get a place by the beach (550 Rs).
ヴィシャーカパトナム。舌を噛みそうな名前だが、幸いにも、みんな「バイザック」という短い名前で呼んでいる。バイザッグにはビーチがあるが、海水浴を楽しむようなビーチではない。ここでは海岸沿いの長い遊歩道が賑やかで人気がある。街の中心部あたりにも安宿があったが、バイザッグはプーリと違って人口150万人の大きな街。せっかくビーチがあるので、すこし高め（550ルピー）だが、ビーチの近くのホテルに泊まることにした。
The attractive beach is Rushikonda, about 8km north or an hour by bus. There are places to stay here, but they all easily fit into the luxury category and so we just did a day trip. The beach here is actually quite nice, but here again there was almost no shade anywhere, and in 40 degree heat we were feeling the need for a cold beer on a patio in short order. Luckily, Rushikonda provides. Just a short walk from the beach itself we found a well-run and clean complex of restaurants and a bar built into the side of hill overlooking the beach.

ラスでゆっくり冷たいビールが飲みたくなった。ラッキーにも、リシュコンダにはそんな場所があった。ビーチから少し歩くと、丘の中腹に立派なレストラン・バーがあり、そこからビーチを見下ろしつつ、ビールを飲んだ。

One note, by Vizag it was approaching mid April and we were really starting to feel the heat. Just a few minutes in the afternoon sun and we were soaking in our own sweat and seeking any shade and a drink of any kind. From here on in we decided to go out and abouting only in the evening as much as possible. It is just too draining. It is the first time that I have experienced being thirsty all day all the time. Still, it beats Shanghai.
ちなみに、バイザックに着くころには4月も半ば近く、暑さも本格的になってきた。日の高い午後に外に出ると、ものの数分で汗だくになり、影を探し回り、喉もカラカラ。なので、この頃から出来るだけ夕方以降に出かけるようになった。とにかく疲れるのだ。1日中喉が渇きっぱなしなんて初めての体験だ。それでも、上海よりはマシだが。
Vizag/バイザックの町
From here, in part because of the heat and in part because we only had a month and bit left on our visas, we decided to forget about going farther south and cut across to Goa on the west coast via Hyderabad.
暑さの問題もあるが、ビザの有効期限が1か月ちょっとしか残っていないということもあったので、これ以上南下するのはやめて、ハイドラバッドを経由して西海岸のゴアへ向かうことにした。
