Varanasi is a holy place for Hindu people, with the “Great Mother”, the Ganges, running through it. Here Hindu people come to cleanse themselves from sin and, also, to cremate their dead. Thus we were somewhat naively expecting a calm place centered about a magnificent river. Wrong on both counts, dead wrong.
バラナシは、「母なる川」であるガンジス川が流れる、ヒンズー教徒にとっては聖なる場所だ。ヒンズー教の人々は、自分の罪を洗い流し、亡くなった人を火葬するためにここを訪れる。なので、我々は愚直にも、壮大な川を中心に広がる穏やかな町を想像していたが、それは間違いだった。
First, while Varanasi is without any doubt a very spiritual place for Hindus (and apparently some Hippies), calm it is not. We were hit right out of the station gates with all the noise and crush of humanity that you can expect in any other city, but on top of that the touts and rickshaw drivers in Varanasi are absolutely crazy. These guys just don’t quit-they follow you around no matter what you say or don’t say. It is really, really trying. The only place for solace in Varanasi, at least for foreigners, is in your hotel or in a restaurant.
バラナシが穏やかな町かどうかは別として、ヒンズー教徒（と一部ヒッピー）にとって非常に精神的な場所であることは確かである。でも、バラナシ・ジャンクション駅の改札を出たとたん、他のインドの街と全く同じで、すぐに人の喧噪と雑踏に包まれた。それだけではない。バラナシの客引きやリクシャの運転手のしつこさは異常だ。彼らは絶対にあきらめないのだ。こちらが何を言おうが、無視しようが、走って逃げようが、あきらめずにどこまでもついて来る。これを振り切るのが本当に大変だった。少なくとも外国人がバラナシで落ち着ける場所は、ホテルかレストランの中ぐらいなのかもしれない。
Then there is the river itself. This “river” can only be described as some kind of septic sludge. It is absolutely revolting. Nothing can live in this river, nothing. Indeed, likely one of the causes of the state of the river today together with the raw sewage flowing into it, Hindus wash their dead in the river before cremating them on the banks. Despite this, though, Hindus do bathe in this river-tens of thousands a day! Apparently there are attempts underway by various groups to clean up the Ganges, and all we can say is more power to them. It is a spiritual place for Hindus, a place where they are to go to wash away their sins, and so any and all efforts are to be applauded.
ガンジス川についても、我々の期待は裏切られた。この「川」は、汚染されたヘドロとしか言いようがない。本当に汚い。どんな生き物もこの川では生存不可能。ヒンズー教の人々は、火葬する前に死体を川に浸すけれど、死人なら川に浸っても大丈夫（ちなみに、ガンジス川の汚染の原因の一部は、町から出る下水の垂れ流し、そして死体の沐浴と、火葬後に流す遺灰）。そんな状態の川で、1日に何千人、何万人ものヒンズー教徒が今でも沐浴をしているのには驚く。複数の組織がガンジス川をきれいにする活動を行っているらしいが、その動きに賛成だ。ガンジス川はヒンズー教徒にとって神聖な場所であり、罪を洗い流す場所であることを考えると、そういった活動は評価されるべきだと思う。
Ganges/ガンジス川
There is one cremation area on the banks that is in operation 24 hours a day (story has it that the fire is the work of Shiva and so never goes out). Here countless bodies wrapped in gold-coloured cloth are carried to the banks and cremated ‘round the clock. After a body is washed in the Ganges, it is placed on a funeral pyre, and further wood is then placed over the body before being set alight. The location of a pyre on the bank is apparently determined by the decedent’s caste-the higher the caste, the higher the location on the banks; the lower the caste, the closer to the river. We were informed that it takes about 3 hours for a body to be cremated. The wood used for the pyres varies in quality, and so in price, meaning that the kind and amount of wood used is usually also a function of the
caste of the decedent. But interestingly the people who actually work the pyres are not of any caste, and as such are known as “untouchables”, or “outcastes”. The family of the decedent usually watch the cremation and rather than downcast appear quietly pleased as the rites are performed. All made for a scene quite unlike we have ever experienced at any funeral. As an aside, photography is strictly forbidden at any of these “burning ghats”, and no exceptions are made for foreigners.
我々が見た川沿いの火葬場は24時間稼働で、金色等の布に包まれた遺体が次々と運ばれてきては火葬されている。1日に何百人もの人がここで荼毘に復すらしい。遺体はガンジス川に浸された後、薪の上に乗せられ、さらにその上に薪を乗せて火がつけられる。火葬場所はカーストによって異なっており、低いカーストは川の近く、高いカーストは川から遠い高い場所らしい。1体の遺体が焼けるのに3時間ほどかかるという。薪も木の種類によって値段が違うので、薪の種類は遺族の懐具合によって変わるのだろう。火葬場で働く人々は、カーストにも入らない、いわゆる「アンタッチャブル」あるいは「アウトカースト」と呼ばれる人々だという。遺族たちは、悲しみにくれているようには見えず、むしろここで家族が火葬されることに精神的な喜びを静かに感じているようにさえ見えた。その横では遺体を焼く火葬場の男性たちが淡々と仕事に励んでいる。なんだか我々が考えるお葬式という雰囲気とは程遠い、なんとも不思議な光景だった。ちなみに火葬場の写真撮影は固く禁止されている。ここではどの旅行者もカメラを構えることはできない。

But for all the significance that the Ganges has, taking a dip in the Ganges just wasn’t on for us. Actually, a waiter at a restaurant illustrated what a great sense of humour Indians have concerning the state of cleanliness of the Ganges. Esshie had asked the waiter where she could wash her hands, to which the waiter replied without missing a beat, “in the Ganges.” Ha ha.
しかし、こんな状態の「ガンガー」で沐浴をやってみようとは全く思わなかった。実際、あるレストランのインド人ウェイターが、ガンジス川の汚さを皮肉って面白いジョークを言った。私が手を洗える場所はありますか、と聞いたら、そのウェイターはすかさず「ええ、ありますよ。ガンジス川です」と言って笑ったのだ。これには爆笑した。
Varanasi is for sure a tourist hot spot, but despite the tenacity of touts and rickshaw drivers, locals, shopkeepers, and restaurateurs are all very nice and many are only too happy to have their pictures taken. Speaking of restaurateurs, walking around the ghats and the old, narrow, winding streets near the ghats you might notice, if you are like me, that there are no shops anywhere to buy beer. That is part of the downside of visiting such a holy place. Don’t despair though, if discreetly asked, restaurateurs will usually sell you a concealed beer or spirit out the backdoor.

ンのように毎日の晩酌が欠かせない人ならすぐ気が付くと思うけど、ガット（川岸にある沐浴者用の階段）周辺の旧市街エリアには、ビールや酒類を買える店が全くない。これはバラナシのように宗教色の濃い町のマイナス面の一つだ。でも絶望することはない。レストランに行って控え目な態度で頼めば、ビールなどを見えないように包んでこっそり売ってくれる。

One last note about Varanasi: if you have ever wondered where all the hippies went, wonder no further-they are all in Varanasi. Seriously, our own rough estimate is that over 50% of the tourists in Varanasi are of the hippie persuasion. This makes people watching here a separate attraction in itself.
バラナシについてもう一つ。ヒッピーたちは今どこへ？と考えたことがある人は、バラナシに行ってみよう。彼らはみんなバラナシにいますよ…、と言えるほど、バラナシにはヒッピー（あるいはヒッピーかぶれ）が多い。我々の勝手な予想では、バラナシの旅行者の50％はヒッピーのようだ。なので、バラナシでは人間観察もまた面白い。
