We left Dingri on the morning of 14 March. The journey from Dingri to Zangmu was the steepest and the most hair-raising. The unpaved “road” snaked its way along precipitous cliffs, all the while throwing us like dolls about the cabin. There was some “construction” going on, and let me tell you there is nothing like passing a huge truck on the blind side of a curve overlooking the abyss. Fun stuff.
14日の朝、ディングリを出発した。ディングリからダムまでの道のりはこれまでで一番険しかった。ひやひやするような崖沿いの道であり、おまけに舗装されていないため、体が人形みたいにくねくねするほど揺れるのである。
Sooner than we thought we arrived at Zangmu, a town near the Nepal border. This is a town literally cut into the face of a mountain, leaving a very narrow, hairpin- curve road for all the cross-border traffic to negotiate. And there was a lot of traffic-the road was clogged all day.
午後の早い時間にネパールとの国境の町、ダムに到着。山肌にあるため、町を通る道は全てピンカーブでしかも細く、その道にそって建物が建っている。国境の町なので、中国やネパールのトラックがその道を頻繁に通るから、道はいつも車で大混雑。
Zangmu/ダムの町
The date of our arrival in Zangmu was 14 March, and just by chance we ran into some Tibetans at a restaurant and learned for the first time of the rioting in Lhasa. Funny because we had just before been in our room watching China’s CCTV International news and there was not a peep of any trouble in Tibet or anywhere else in China.
私達は、ダムに到着した14日の夜、たまたま同じレストランにいたチベットの人たちからラサの暴動のことを初めて聞いたのである。その直前にホテルでCCTV Internationalのニュースを見たが、暴動についての報道なんてひとつもなかったので、本当に驚いてしまった。
On the morning of 15 March we passed Chinese immigration and arrived at the Nepal border (for some reason there is a long gap between Chinese immigration and Nepal immigration). This is where we left our Tibet guide and driver, but not before we were hit up right there and then with the tour fee. The company we contracted with for the tour, Heian Treks & Tours, was a Nepalese company, to which we had already paid a 15% advance, and so we found it strange that this guide, who was also telling us that he was not an agent for the Nepal company, asking us for the whole fee (not only the remaining balance) in cash in the back of the Land Cruiser at the Nepal border. This
didn’t smell good so I asked to speak to the person whom the Tibetan guide kept calling his “boss” on the Nepal side of the border. Again, this guy said he knew nothing of the advance payment. Listening to this and having the receipt of the advance payment in hand we demanded payment of the balance only and only after we cross the Nepal border. Funnily enough, this “boss” (really just a Nepali guide who was subcontracted by the Nepal travel agency we contracted with) told us that the Tibetan guide was supposed to have requested the balance at the hotel in Lhasa, but of course we were never requested same in Lhasa; rather, the Tibetan guide received a call from the “boss” at the border just before we were to cross and in an apparent panic asked us for the money. But then, that was our guide. All the same, we hope that both he and the driver made it safely back to Lhasa.
15日の朝、中国の入管を通過し、ネパール国境へ。ここでチベット人のガイドさん、運転手さんとはお別れとなる。でもお別れする前に、急にツアー料金を今ここで自分に払ってほしいと言ってきた。このツアーはネパールの旅行会社が手配したもので、その会社には前金も支払い済みだったが、このガイドさんの説明によると、彼はその旅行会社の人間ではないらしいのだ。ネパールの会社とガイドが所属する会社がどういう関係にあるのか、ガイドさんの説明ではいまいち分からないので、ダンがガイドの上司と言われる人を電話に出してもらい、その人物と話をすると、前金の支払については知らないという。ダンは、それでは困るので残額は前金を支払ったネパールの会社に支払いたいと繰り返し説明し、結局ネパール入りしてからネパールのガイドに支払うことになった。ちなみに、ガイドの上司の話では、本当はラサにいる時に支払いを済ませるべきだったそうなのだが、どうやらガイドがそれを我々に告げるのを忘れていたらしく、国境まで来てから電話で上司に言われ、あわてて支払を求めてきたようなのだ。最後までおっちょこちょいなガイドだった。あれから無事にラサにもどったのだろうか。
China-Nepali border/中国-ネパール国境
Crossing into Nepal at this point consists of crossing a narrow bridge by foot that spans a mountain range. Although we already passed Chinese “immigration” back at Zangmu, there is another “checkpoint” at the one end of the bridge and Nepal immigration at Kodali on the other. Immigration is a desk in a hut-type place staffed by plainclothes Nepal border authorities. Here we received in less than 5 minutes our gratis 3-day visa (over 3 days: 30-day visa for 30 USD), and got in the arranged Jeep for the trip to Kathmandu.
山間にある橋を徒歩で渡るともうネパール。橋を渡る前にもう一度中国側のパスポートチェックがあり、橋を渡り終えるとネパールの入管がネパールのコダリという町にある。簡素な小屋に私服のおじさんたちがいるが、彼らが職員のようだ。その場でネパールの観光ビザ3日分（4日以上30日以下のビザは30米ドルかかる）を取得し、ジープに乗って一路カトマンドゥへ。長かった中国滞在もこれで終わり。前日までチベットで寒い寒いと言っていたのに、国境を越えると不思議と天候も暖かくなった。これからは暖かいジャケットもしばらく出番がなくなるだろう。
