これはノンフィクションだからびっくり一読をおすすめする。
「本籍、住所、氏名不明、年齢75歳ぐらい。女性。身長133cm、中肉、右手指全て欠損、現金34,821,350円。尼崎市のアパートで令和2年4月に絶命した状態で発見された。死因はその後、病死と推定され、事件性はないものとして火葬された」という内容の尼崎市の官報が出された。この死亡者を法律用語では「行旅死亡人」となる。警察の捜査では、彼女の死因はくも膜下出血による突然死で特に不審なことはなく事件性はないとなった。この死亡人の管理は警察から市に移された。
官報を読んだ共同通信の記者はこの件には、何かがある！と取材を1年かけてまとめたのがこの本だ。調べると、アパートに住んでいたが住民登録はしていなかった。大家さんに名前は田中千津子と名のっていたが証明するものはない。年齢の証明もない。身長は極端に低く、指が欠損された理由も不明。その上、現金で3482万円も部屋にあった。遺産を相続する人もわからず、相続財産管理人に弁護士を選任されていた。
なによりも3480万円を現金で持っていたことが謎だ。部屋には、アルバムの写真、田中と沖宗と言う名の印鑑、おおきなぬいぐるみ、銀行と郵貯通帳、韓国の紙幣、星マークの付いたペンダントなどであった。
これらから行旅死亡人の手掛かりを探す取材がはじまる。ついに本人をつきとめたが、さらに深まる謎・・・
