Early Spring Kabuki Performance "Toyama Sakura Tenpo Nikki" National Theater

We watched the early spring Kabuki performance "Toyama Zakura Tenpo Nikki" at the National Theater in which "Kin-san of Toyama" is the main character. Kinshiro Toyama is a real person who served as the Edo town() magistrate(奉行) at the end of the Edo period. He had a commoner(庶民) personality, and is said to have saved the theater town from its life-or-death crisis due to the thrifty(倹約) ordinance() of the 'Tempo Reforms'(改革). Kikugoro Onoe acted as Kinshiro, and Shōroku Onoe, Kikunosuke Onoe, and Tokizo Nakamura appeared(登場). It's a lively play like New Year's. (Fuekata)

Before becoming a magistrate(奉行), Kinshiro, who likes plays, was a singer (Utakata(唄方)) at the Kawarazaki(河原崎座)-za. There, a big fight breaks out between the flute playerFuekata(笛方) and the musical instrument player(Narumonoshi(鳴物師)). “Kin-san,” who entered the arbitration(仲裁) process, successfully settled the dispute(もめごと).

An incident occurs. A young master of a shop is in love with a young woman who is a singing() teacher(師匠), but his parents object(反対), and the two commit(心中する) suicide. But the man survives(生き残る). The young master who survived goes down(落ちる) the path() of evil(). There, a rogue(ごろつき) ex-samurai who has fallen into disrepair appears(登場), a depraved(破戒僧) monk who attends Yoshiwara. Extortion(ゆすり), burglary(強盗), murder(殺し), and robbery(略奪) of the Sado Gold Mine are carried out. The story is absurd(荒唐無稽) and exaggerated, but the play is amusing. At the end, at Shirasu(白洲) Court, the familiar Kinshiro's brilliant judgment ends with the final line, "This case(これにて) is closed(一件落着)!"

This(その後) was followed by dancing and performances by all the actors, typical(典型的な) of a New Year's performance. Celebratory hand towels were scattered(配られ) toward the audience(観客). Kikugoro shouted "Bravo! and The "Kitsune Dance" of the Nichi-Ham supporters appeared in the dance. I thought, "This is traditional kabuki," but I was convinced(納得) that kabuki is always about adding something new.

I thought it would be a good idea for this history(史談会) club to hold a kabuki theater performance for the first(初めて) time. We expected(見込んで) about 20 people to attend, but were surprised to see nearly 60 people sign up. The interest of the members was high.  Female members were dressed up!
