National Theater "Kabuki & Rakugo Collaboration Chushingura"

On November 18th, I watched a Kabuki performance at the National Theater. This time, "Kabuki & Rakugo Collaboration Chushingura".

Kanpei Hayano, a vassal(家臣) of the Enya(塩谷家) family, had a rendezvous(ランデブー・逢引) with Okaru at the time of his master's serious(深刻な) incident. As a result, he quit(ヤメル) his job as a vassal and became a hunter(猟師). This is a sub-story of Chushingura, or Takumi Asano, who cut Kira Kozukenosuke(吉良上野介) and be forced to seppuku(切腹) because of it. Kanpei, who wanted to take part in revenge(復讐) against Kira, shoots and kills Sadakuro(斧定九郎) Ono, the villain(悪党) who killed his wife Okaru's father and stole his money, mistaking him for a boar. He mistakenly thought that he had killed his father-in-law.

Kanpei fails at a critical(致命的) moment in his life. Sadakuro was mistaken(猪に間違え) for a boar and killed after stealing(盗る) money. In fact, Sadakuro was the son of the chief retainer(臣下) of the Enya family and had fallen into disrepair(没落した). This is Kabuki, a mysterious story that unfolds(展開する) dramatically. Another ``Chushingura'' where the main character is a slightly useless(役立たず) character that is not a movie, storytelling(講談), or a rokyoku(浪曲).

Rakugo "Nakamura Nakazo" is a rakugo story in which Nakazo, who played(定九郎を演じだ) Sadakuro Ono, is an Edo period actor, and Koasa Shunputei(春風亭小朝) talks about "the anguish(苦悩) of an actor's performance." The main character is Nakazo, who worked hard as an actor to play the role of Sadakuro(定九郎役). But the role is a goofy(間抜けな) rogue(ならず者) with few(数行) lines. Koasa told a funny story about Nakazo's efforts(努力) to breathe(息を吹き込む) life into a small role. This is what it means to devote yourself to theatrical art!

I'm not usually familiar(縁遠い) with Kabuki, but I was moved.

The National Theater will be rebuilt next year.
