Who Will Replace Jay Weinberg? Six Drummers Who Have Ties to Slipknot

With Slipknot parting ways with drummer Jay Weinberg on Nov. 5, 2023, the band is tasked with another personnel change.

Here are six drummers who have connections to members of Slipknot.

Vended, Simon Crahan

How much stronger of a connection can you have than being the son of the founding member of Slipknot?

Simon, Clown’s son, will turn 20 years old in January, but is playing at a level that far exceeds his years. He currently plays in metal band Vended, which is fronted by Corey Taylor’s son Griffin, and, stylistically, there are some obvious comparisons to draw to Slipknot’s sounds.

In August of 2022, Simon even asserted that he is a better drummer than his father, so he could reasonably cut it behind the kit if he were to join the band.

Roy Mayorga, Stone Sour

With more than 30 years of experience dating back to his crust punk days in Nausea, Roy Mayorga offers a high pedigree of professionalism.

Slipknot fans know him best for his work in Stone Sour from 2006 through 2020, working with both Corey Taylor and Jim Root during his tenure.

Mayorga also has experience in stepping into the place of a legend, having toured with Hellyeah following the death of Vinnie Paul.

Dustin Robert, Corey Taylor

Dustin Robert is in Corey Taylor’s current live band and played on his two solo albums, CMFT and CMF2

With Taylor, he can obviously handle a lot of versatility, even covering some Slipknot songs live.

Does he have what it takes to execute the band’s most demanding and physical material?

Dan Foord, SikTh

V-Man’s bandmate in Krokodil, a progressive groove metal band, Dan Foord is a skilled drummer who has also been anchoring mathcore veterans SiKth, playing on all three of their albums.

Having played with V-Man already, the two have obvious chemistry as a rhythm section, which could make stepping into the role of being Slipknot’s drummer just a tad easier.

Joel Ekman, Stone Sour

From 1992 to 1997 and again from 2000 to 2006, Joel Ekman served as the drummer for Stone Sour, having co-founded the group with Corey Taylor. Jim Root was also Ekman’s bandmate during the guitarist’s two tenures and the drummer played on Stone Sour’s self-titled 2002 debut.

Ekman left Stone Sour to care for his son Isaac James, who was diagnosed with cancer. Isaac sadly died not long after.

The drummer later formed a rock band named after his son, which has been infrequently active.

Dave Culross, Suffocation

This connection is a bit of a stretch, but it exists nonetheless.

Slipknot’s Mick Thomson played a guest solo on “Deliver My Enemy” off Doomsday X, the 10th album by Florida death metal icons Malevolent Creation. That record featured drummer Dave Culross, an extreme metal technician whose résumé includes stints in Suffocation, Pyrexia and more.

Culross, however, has not been very active in recent years.
