12月4日 太地町滞在記9（パート1）

> 鯨慰霊碑近くの展望台で太地の美しい日の出を見ているとき、シーシェパードからイルカの群れが湾の方に追い込まれそうだという連絡が入りました。日の出は息をのむほどの美しく私はそこで太陽からのエネルギーを吸収しながら、この岩の向こう側で行われているイルカ漁を想像して不気味な感じがしました。こんなに美しい町なのになんて恐ろしい伝統なんだろう。

> すると今度はイルカの群れがコーヴに追い込まれたとシーシェパードから連絡が入ったので急いで車に飛び乗ってコーヴに向かいました。これまで何度もコーヴを通りかかりましたが今日の景色は全く違ってみえます。普段は人気がないコーヴに大勢が集まって海を眺めているのです。これからコーヴに近づいてくる漁船を想像して心臓がばくばくしますが、なにも動きがないので近くの男性に「今イルカを追い込んでいるの？」と聞きました。男性が不思議そうな顔で私を見て「いや、まだわからない。」そう答えた途端一艘の小型船が岩の向こうに見えて3艘が続けて姿を現しました。カンカンカンカン耳障りな金属音が聞こえ、船と船の間にはパニックを起こして怯えているイルカの群れが見えます。漁船はさらにコーヴの奥へとイルカを追い込んでいます。奇跡が起こってなんとかしてイルカがコーヴから脱出することを祈らずにはいられません。恐ろしい運命が近づくイルカを見るのはつらすぎます。人から話を聞くだけでもつらいのに、自分の目で目撃するとさらに大きな衝撃です。

> 追い込まれるイルカの姿を確認した後、屠殺が行われるコーヴの右側の小さな入り江が見える高台に移動しました。そこでシーシェパードに遭遇したのですが、彼らはふた手にわかれて別々の場所を監視していることに気付きました。ひとつは屠殺場となる”コーヴ”の奥の小さな入り江が見えるポイント、もうひとつはその入り江への追い込みと漁船の出入りが見えるポイントです。ここからは小型船が入り江に入っていく様子や調教師が群れの中からイルカを選別する様子、その選別からもれた残りのイルカを漁師が屠殺する様子が見えます。漁師は入り江に入ると防水シートで一帯を覆い隠すので屠殺そのものは見えませんが、イルカがじたばたして水をはねる音や時折発する叫び声が聞こえます。覚悟はしていましたが耐えきれず心が沈みます。その場に座り込み、苦しんでいるイルカを助けることができない現実に胸が痛みます。屠殺が行われている山側に近づいたら私は感情のコントロールを失うおそれがあるので絶対に行きません。この場に留まってイルカが最小限の痛みで迅速な死を遂げるように神に祈ります。ここに座って大海原を見つめて思うのは、このイルカの群れはこの広い海で自由に泳ぎまわり、飛び跳ね、仲間と戯れ、自由を楽しんでいるのが本来あるべき姿なのに・・・悲惨な運命に巡り合ってしまいました。イルカは人間を信頼し私たちに対して思いやりをもっています。それなのに私たち人間はイルカに何てことをしているのでしょう。なぜ神は海の天使たちを保護しなかったのでしょう。なにか理由があるのでしょうか。神は理由もなくこんなことをしませんよね？私は今日犠牲になったイルカたちに黙祷を捧げ、人間からイルカへの仕打ちを詫びて赦しを請いました。なんとも絶望的な気分です。今の心の状態で、予定通り大阪で今夜のミーティングに出たあとそのまま自宅に帰れるだろうか。

> 不屈の精神を貫く大和魂を持った男が、言葉や涙では表現できないほど今目の前で起こった出来事にひどく打撃を受けている・・・。これまでの自分と同じではいられなくなるほどの打撃を。

> そのとき警察官がこちらに近づいてきました。シーシェパードが言うにはいつものことらしいのですが。そして質問表を手渡され住所、氏名、連絡先、太地を訪問した理由、太地の次に訪問予定の都市等を記入するように言われました。そこでパスポートの提示を求められたのですが私は所持していません。警察官が言うには私はパスポートの携行義務があるそうで、もし所持していなければ捕まる可能性もあるそうです。でも警察官は私のことを知っていたので今回は特例扱いしてくれました。それには感謝しますが、私は数分前に起こった出来事にまだ動揺していて放心状態です。

> そこへ太地の友人から電話が入って、鯨肉やイルカ肉の配送業をしている男性が私に会いたがっているとのこと。私は不意を突かれました。今までは私が皆に話し合いをお願いする立場だったのに、今は逆に会いたがっている人がいるというのです・・・なぜ？

> and asked, "Are they driving dolphin in?" He looked at me in a strange
> way and said, "We don't know yet." Just as he said that a skiff came
> around the bend and three banger boats followed. You could hear the
> banging, clank clank clank clank and in the water between the boats
> you could see a pod of dolphins panicked and swimming in fright. As
> the boats drove the dolphins deeper into the cove I couldn't help but
> pray in my heart that the dolphins somehow would make a miracle
> escape. It was so heart breaking to see the dolphins nearing their
> horrible fate. To hear about it is sad but to see it in person it has
> a much bigger impact on you.

> spot above the cove to get a look into the smaller cove to the right
> where the slaughter takes place. There I ran into all the Sea Shepherd
> supporters and noticed there were two spots they were monitoring. The

> and the point where you can see the drive come in and you can see the
> vessels that go in and out of the cove. At the point you can see all
> the skiffs come in and you can see the trainers come in to pick the
