名詞構文

名詞構文とは「動詞または形容詞が名詞化されて文に組み込まれた構文」ということで、日本語と比較した場合の英語の表現の特色の1つである。

1)　基本例　元の語がa) 自動詞, b) 他動詞, c) 形容詞の場合。

a) あなたが早くよくなるように願っています。

We are hoping for your quick recovery.

You will recover quikcly.

Cf.　We are hoping that you will recover quickly.

b) この詩人は自然を深く愛することで広く知られています。

This poet is widely known for his deep love of nature.

He loves nature deeply.

Cf.　This poe is widely known because he loves nature deeply.

c) ジェーンがパーティを欠席したので、ベンはがっかりした。

Ben was disappointed at Jane's absence from the party.

Jane was absent from the party.

Cf. Ben was disapponted to find that Jane was absent from party.

上の3つの例を見ると、動詞・形容詞の名詞化によって下線の部分には別の文が組み込まれていることが理解できよう。
