注意すべき不可算名詞

日本人には可算名詞と感じられる語の中には、英語では不可算名詞として扱われる語がある。代表的なものをあげてみよう。

1) work homeworkやhousework も同じである。

I have some work to do this evening. （今晩は仕事があります）

Our teacher gives us a lot of homework.　（宿題をたくさん出します）

I need someone to help me with housework.　（だれか家事を手伝ってくれる人が必要です）

☆具体的な「作品」の意味のときは可算名詞になる。

The wedding cake was a work of art.

I have a complete set of Hemingway's works.

同じ「仕事」でもjobとtaskは可算名詞である。

She took a job in a store for the summer.　（夏の間ある店で働いた）

Writing that long report was quite a task.　（ひと仕事であった）

2)news　数えるときには a piece of や an item of を使う。

I have (some) good news for you.　（君にいい知らせがある）

He brought me a piece of news.　（ニュースを1つ持って来た）

☆informationも不可算名詞である。

That's an interesting piece of information.　（おもしろそうな話だ）

3)advice　数えるときには a piece of やa word of を使う。

She decided to take legal advice.

Let me give you some / a piece of advice.　（君に忠告をさせてください）

4) baggage<米>/luggage<英>　数えるときには a piece of を使う。

How many pieces of baggage do you have?　（手荷物はいくつありますか）

Some of the luggage has not arrived yet.　（まだ着いていない手荷物がある）

5) furniture 数えるときには a piece of や an article of などを使う。

Furniture consists of pieces of furniture.　（英語のfurnitureは1つ1つの家具の集合体である）

Her room was furnished with a fine set of furniture.　

（彼女の部屋には立派な家具がひとそろい備えつけてあった）

6) fruit

Please help yourself to some fruit.　（果物を自由に召し上がってください）

☆種類を示すときは可算名詞になる。

The tomato is a vegetable, not a fruit.　（トマトは野菜で、果物ではない）

Can you give the names of five different summer fruits?　（夏の果物の名前を5つあげてください）
