総金地に濃淡の群青と緑青のみによって鮮烈に描きだされた燕子花の群生。右隻と左隻の対照と均衡を計算しつつ、燕子花をリズミカルに配置する意匠的構図が圧倒的ですが、花弁のふっくらとした表現も見逃せません。本格的に絵画の制作をはじめてから10年前後、光琳がたどり着いた最初の芸術的頂点である。

Clusters of iris flowers are rendered in varying intensities of azurite blue and malachite green against a gold ground. The contrasting composition of the left and right screens and the rhythmical arrangement of the motif at first glance stand out for their decorative, design-like qualities, but the plump depiction of the flower petals also cannot be overlooked. These screens from Ogata Kōrin’s forties are considered the first artistic pinnacle of his career.
