International Food Fair

今晩、ホープ・カレッジで「インターナショナル・フード・フェアー」というイベントがありました。

大学に来ている留学生たちが、それぞれの国の食べ物を作ってくれました。

たくさんの人たちが食べにきました。

いろいろな国の食べ物を食べながら、その国の文化の勉強にもなります。

Tonight we went to the "International Food Fair" at Hope College. The international students on campus get together to prepare foods from all different countries. People from the community come to enjoy all of the wonderful food and learn about the different countries.

食べ物はもちろん、ただではありません。でも、集まったお金は、すべて地元のチャリティーに寄付されます。

とても素晴らしい事だと思います。

学生はみんな、がんばってくれました。　

さすがのボランティア精神です！

It is also a fundraiser, and the money raised goes to a local charity. It was a great success and the students did a wonderful job!

日本人の学生は、お好み焼きといなり寿司とぜんざいを作りました。

とても美味しかったですよ！

The Japanese students made Okonomiyaki, Inarizushi, and Zensai. It was all very good.

フレンチのチーズケーキとドイツのチョコレートケーキもとっても美味しかった～！

甘すぎず、ちょうどよかったです。

I also really enjoyed the French cheesecakes and the German chocolate cake. They weren't too sweet. It was perfect!

と言うことで、またまた食べ物の話になってしまいました。。。。

So, again, all I wrote about was food....my favorite subject!

Catching Up

今日も晴れでした。　晴れる日はとても感謝です！　

Today ended up being another sunny day.....I truly appreciate the sunshine.

シュークリームを久しぶりに作りました　シュークリームが大好きです！

子供たちにも大人気！

やっぱり、カスタードと生クリームのくみあわせには何とも言えませんね。

I made cream puffs! I love cream puffs, so I decided to make some. They were really good! My kids loved them! There's nothing better than homemade custard and whip cream....

昨日、フロリダから帰ってきたとても仲のいい友達と食事にいきました。

久しぶりに会えてとてもうれしかったです。

彼は、フロリダとミシガン州両方で不動産屋さんをやっています。

Yesterday, I saw a very close friend of mine who came back from Florida. It was very good to see him again. He is a realtor doing real estate in both Michigan and Florida.

”The Grill Room"というレストランにいきました。



食べ物はもちろんとても美味しくて、ワインリストもりっぱです。

ワインはイタリアからの赤。

アペタイザーは、タイ風のグリルチキンのレタス巻き。ぴりからピーナッツソース付き。

メインは、キングクラブとプライムリブ。　

デザートは、チョコレートケーキとラズベリーソース。

とても美味しかったですよ！食べ過ぎました。。。。

We went out for dinner at a restaurant called "The Grill Room." They have wonderful food and a good wine list. We ordered a bottle of a Tuscan red to drink.

For an appetizer, we ordered Thai style grilled chicken in lettuce wraps with a spicy peanut sauce. I had King Crab legs and he ordered Prime Rib. We also ordered some onion rings which I love! For dessert, we had chocolate cake with raspberry sauce.

It was all very good! I was STUFFED!!!

食べ物より、友達と一緒に時間を過ごせたのがうれしかったです。

ユーモアがあって、笑顔がとてもかわいい人です。

友達がいない人生って考えられません。

But more than the food, it was good to be able to catch up on each other's lives. He has a wonderful sense of humor and it was good to hear him laugh. Friends are truly a gift.

次女はちょっとずつ元気になってきました。

もう今年は風邪を引かないようにと願っています。

かんばります。

My daughter is getting better. I think another week and she should be completely well again. I hope she won't catch another cold before the winter is over. Enough is enough!

Cold and Flu Season....

今日は久しぶりに晴れました！

太陽が見えました～！

とても、うれしかったです

It was actually sunny today! I was so happy to see the sun!

次女を病院につれて行きました。

昨晩、耳と頭が痛くてほとんど眠れませんでした。痛み止めを飲ませたんですが、あんまり効き目がなかったみたいです。

かわいそうに。

中耳炎と、RSVという風邪のウィールスでした。

RSVは、気管支と肺を攻撃する風邪です。娘は、心臓が弱いので、特に危険です。

でも、薬を飲んで家で安静にしてれば大丈夫でしょう。

I had to take my younger daughter in to the doctor today. She did not sleep much last night because she was in a lot of pain. I gave her some pain medication and that helped her alittle. She has an ear infection and RSV, which is a respiratory virus. The doctor prescribed some medicine for her, so hopefully , she will start feeling better soon.

お医者さんでおりこうさんだったので、ごほうびに、マクドナルドでハッピーミールを買ってあげました。

もちろん、チョコレート・ミルクシェークも買いました！

As a reward for being so good at the doctor's, we bought food from McDonald's for dinner. We also bought a chocolate shake because they love milkshakes!

疲れたので、今晩は、バブルバスに入って、リラックスしたいと思います。

ラベンダーの香りのバブルをたくさん。

そして、もちろん音楽。

ワインも飲もうかな。。。。

そう、そう、キャンドルライトも。

Tonight, it is going to be a bubblebath night for me. Lots of Lavendar bubbles, good music, and a candle....Maybe I'll even have a glass of wine. Very relaxing.

Pizza and a Movie

今日も雪がたくさん降りました。やみそうもなくて。。。。まいりました。

It snowed a lot today....it doesn't seem to stop!

Help!

昨日の晩、友達がアイスクリームケーキをもってきてくれました。

チョコレートのアイスクリームでした。真ん中にチョコレートケーキが入っていました。

美味しかったですよ！

たくさんおしゃべりをして、かなり笑いました。とても楽しいひと時でした。

Last night, my friend brought over an ice-cream cake! It was chococlate ice-cream with chocolate cake in the middle. It was very good! We had fun talking and laughing.

今晩は、ピザをたのんで、映画をみることにしました。

ピザはぴり辛のチキンピザと、ホワイト・バジル・チキンピザでした。

私は辛いものが好きなので、ぴりからのピザは大好きです。

もう一つのピザは、バジルが入ったホワイトソースベースのピザです。ピザの上にチキン、たまねぎ、マッシュルーム、チーズと、細かくきざんだバジルがのっていました。

どっちもとても美味しかったです！



Tonight, we ordered pizza from a restaurant we like called, "Sluggo's" and decided to watch a movie. We ordered cajun chicken pizza and a white basil chicken pizza. Both were very good!

The cajun pizza was a little spicy, but I like hot food. The other pizza had a white sauce made with basil, and on top was grilled chicken, onions, mushrooms, mozarella cheese and some more chopped basil.

映画は、”Smile"という映画です。



主人公のアメリカ人の女子高生が、医者やボランティアの人達と第三世界に行って、生まれた時から口の障害がある子供達を助けてあげるお話です。治療はもちろんすべて無料です。

このようなボランティアの団体がこのような子供達を助けてあげられることは本当に奇跡です。手術前と後の違いは、言葉ではうまく説明できないほど素晴らしい違いです。

自分の笑顔を自由に見せられることは、当たり前のことではないなとあらためて思いました。

The movie we watched was called, "Smile." It was a movie about how this high school girl, along with doctors, nurses, and volunteers from around the world go to third world countries to help children with birth defects involving the mouth, such as a cleft palate.

Their services are completely free and they perform miraculous surgeries to correct the problem so that these individuals can "smile" again.

とても感動する映画でした。

まだこの世の中にたくさん素晴らしい人がいるかと思うと希望がわいてきました。

人がだれかのことを思うなら、どんなに素晴らしいことができるか。。。。

誰かのために役に立てることは幸せだと思います。犠牲を払うとがじゃなく、自由に無条件で誰かのために何かができることって、すごいですよね。

私も、自己中心ではなく、ちゃんと周りのことを意識しながら生きて生きたいと思っています。

I was very touched and moved. It is a good feeling to know that there are still many good people out in the world who care about one another, and who are willing to volunteer and give freely of their time to help others in need. Such generosity is so needed in this world, especially today.

The Barefoot Contessa

今日はわりと静かな一日でした。

次女の風邪がかなりひどいので、家でおとなしくしているのが一番です。

早く治ってほしいです。

Today was a quiet day at home. Actually, my younger daughter has a very bad cold, so it was necessary to stay home and away from people.

久しぶりに、いろいろ料理の本を読みました。　

気分転換に。

Ina　Gartenの書いたThe Barefoot In Parisという本が特に好きです。



彼女は自分に”The Barefoot Contessa"というあだ名をつけています。

料理がとても上手で、料理番組も持っているし、本も何冊か書いてます。

I was looking through some of my cookbook and one of the books I really like is The Barefoot in Paris by Ina Garten. She calls herself the "Barefoot Contessa." She is a wonderful cook and has her own TV shows as well as cookbooks.

フランス料理のレシピがいっぱい入っています。

私はフランス料理が大好きなので、この本でいろいろ勉強になっています。

レシピは、フランス料理のベーシックから、ちょっとチャレンジを楽しめるレシピもあります。

I like this one in particular because it focuses on French food. I LOVE French food! It has many wonderful recipes, ranging from the basics to ones that offer a fun challenge.

友達が今から手作りケーキをもってきてくれます。

楽しみです！

A Dark and Stormy Day

今日は、暗くて変な天気の一日でした。

雪が降ったら、雨が降り、雷がなっていると思ったら氷雨。

今晩はまた雪が降り、強風とあわせると吹雪状態です。

こういう時は、暖かい家にこもって映画をみるのが一番。。。。

It was a very dark and strange day. We had snow, thunderstorms, and ice. We are supposed to get some more snow tonight. It was the perfect day to stay at home and watch movies....

晩御飯に肉だんごと野菜いっぱいのクリームシチューを作りました。

美味しかったです！ホッとする料理。

スープとかシチューを作るのが好きです。　

特に、とても寒い冬の日に作ると、幸せな気分になります。

I made a cream stew with small meatballs and lots of vegetables. We ate it with some rice. I really enjoy making soups and stews. Soup is the perfect food for a cold winter's night, isn't it?

札幌にいるとても仲のいい友達が「六花亭」のチョコレートを送ってきてくれました

A very close friend of mine sent some "Rokkatei" chocolate. It was white chocolate covering dried strawberries. Love it!!! She knows how much I love the snacks at "Rokkatei." Thank you, mana chan!!!

ところで、家族の友達が、昨日突然心臓麻痺で亡くなってしまいました。　

しかも、まだ５５歳。

みんな悲しくてショックです。

とても心やさしくて、しずかな人でした。

人生って本当にわからないものですね。

命はとても高価で尊いものだと思います。　当たり前にはできませんね。

お葬式は月曜日です。

一生、私達の思い出の中で彼は生きています。忘れません。

A good friend of our family passed away last night. He was only 55. He died of a heart attack. It was a shock and we are greatly saddened. He was a very gentle person with a very kind heart. Life is so unpredictable and precious. His funeral is Monday. He will always live on in our memories. We will all miss him very much.

Wishing for Chicago

やっぱり大雪注意報はあたりでした。

大雪、氷雨、強風。

家で、おとなしくこっもている予定です。

娘の幼稚園も休みになるでしょうね。

We are getting ready for a big winter storm! They predict snow, freezing rain, and high winds. NOT good! My daughter will probably not have to go to school tomorrow....

明日、とても仲の良い友達がフロリダから帰ってきます。

でも、先に何日かシカゴで過ごす予定らしい。

いいなあ～！ずる～い！

とてもうらやましいです！

A very good friend of mine is coming back from Florida tomorrow. But, he is going to spend a couple of days in Chicago first. LUCKY him!!! His itinerary makes me jealous!!!



着いた日は、カクテルと夕食をハンコック・タワーにある「シグニチャー・ルーム」でとるそうです。

ここはとってもすてきなレストランです！見晴らしもとてもよくて、夜景も何とも言えません。



とてもロマンチック。

土曜日には、ランチ・バイキングをやっています。お値段も良くて人気があります！

The first night, it's cocktails and dinner at "The Signature Room," in the Hancock Tower. This is a beautiful restaurant with amazing views of the city! On Saturdays, they have a lunch buffet which is pretty good. It's also very romantic.


もちろん、ミシガン・アベニューでショッピング。

シカゴピザ。美味しいですよね～！大好きです！

そして、”Billygoat Tavern"というバーのチーズバーガーとビールも、安くて美味しい！



ここは、”Saturday Night Live"というコメディーの番組で全米で有名になりました。昔は、よく新聞記者の溜まり場で知られていた場所です。とてもおもしろくて、シカゴの歴史に残る場所だと思います。

Then, it's shopping on Michigan Avenue, maybe some great Chicago pizza, and grabbing a cheeseburger and beer at the "Billygoat Tavern," made famous through SNL ("Saturday Night Live") comedy sketches. It used to be a bar where newspaper reporters used to hang out. It is a fun place and a part of Chicago's great history.

こっちに帰ってくる前に、”Garretts"という美味しいポップコーンのお店に行って、キャラメル・ポップコーンを買ってくるように言っておきました。




ここのキャラメル・ポップコーンはとっても、とっても美味しいですよ！

大、大、大好きです

ポップコーンが好きな人は、ぜひこのお店を行ってみてくださ～い！

いつも行列ができているので、忍耐して待つしかありません。

そうだ。わすれてた。

友達はあんまり忍耐がない人です。

やばい。

I told him to stop by "Garretts," an AWESOME popcorn store, and bring some caramel popcorn home! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE their caramel popcorn!!! There is always a line of people waiting patiently. If you like popcorn, this store is definitely a MUST!!!

まあ、いいでしょう。どうせ、私も近いうちにシカゴに行くつもりなので...。

Oh well. I plan to get to Chicago very soon myself....

A Sweet Day

今朝、娘達のために、型のホットケーキを作ってあげました。

とても喜んでくれて、うれしかったです！

This morning, I made some heart shaped pancakes for my daughters. They were surprised and very happy!　I was also very happy!

娘達がまたまたカードを作ってくれました。

そして、すてきなお花も。次女が選んだらしいです。

旦那からもカードをもらいました。

また感動の涙が。。。。

My daughters made another card for me. They also gave me some pretty flowers. My younger daughter apparently picked them out. I also received a card from my husband as well. I was moved to tears once again....

長女が幼稚園から帰ってきてから、早速”おやつ春巻き”を作ってみました！

とっても美味しかったで～す

子供達も、旦那も気に入ってくれました！

When my older daughter came home from kingergarten, I made the springrolls with bean paste and bananas. They were a hit! Everyone loved them! Thank you again, Ema san!

次女が風を引いたみたいです。

せきがけっこうひどい。

気管支炎とか肺炎にならなければいいんですが。

彼女の心臓のことを思うとやっぱり心配です。

My younger daughter has caught a cold. Her cough is pretty bad. I'm hoping that it will not develop into bronchitis or pneumonia. I worry a little because of her heart.

大雪注意報が出ています。

もう雪はいいです！

早く春になってほしいですよ！

We have a Snow Storm Watch in effect right now. I am tired of the snow! I am so ready for spring!!!

これから、みんなでデザートをたべます。

そして、ちょっと”DDR"もやろうと思ってます。

もっと自分の”歳らしいこと”をしたほうがいいですか？

やっぱり。

Now, we are going to have some dessert and maybe play a little "DDR." We should play something more "age appropriate" maybe? So true.

It's finally "Valentine's Day." I still find it fascinating that we actually have a special day set aside to celebrate love. I think it's definitely a good thing....

長女が私のために幼稚園でバレンタインカードを作ってくれました

大きな紫のハート。まわりを真っ赤なテイッシュペーパーで作った花で飾ってました。　

すっごくかわいかったですよ～！　感動しました

My older daughter made me a Valentine's card at school. It was a big purple heart with a border made of red tissue paper flowers. So cute!!!

次女は、ぬりえから絵を選んで色を塗ってくれました。

お姉ちゃんのまねをしようとしてたんでしょうね。

またまた感動してしまいました。

My younger daughter colored a picture for me from one of her coloring books. She was trying to be like her older sister.

娘達と、”おやつ春巻き”を作ります。バナナとあんこが入っているレシピーです。

実は、”エマのほっこり笑顔”という私がとても気にいってるブログからお借りしたレシピーです！

My daughters and I are going to make "Dessert Springrolls" with bananas and bean paste. It is actually a recipe I borrowed from another blog I really like called, "Emma no Hokkori Egao." Thank you, Ema san!

同じ名前だったのも、興味がわいた理由の一つでしたが。

しかも、私達二人とも娘が二人いて、娘の年齢もとても近いのに気づいて、とてもおもしろいと思いました。　

It actually first caught my attention because she and I have the same name, and in her profile she wrote that she has two daughters, and so do I. Our daughters are also around the same age, which makes it more interesting.

　　 　 　　

この世の中には「愛っていうもの」がますますなくなってきた気がします。

ですから、愛情がもらえるとき、恋愛であってもプラトニック（純愛）であっても感謝するべきですよね。

でも、もらうだけではなく、愛をあげるのも大切だと思います。そうすれば、世界はもっといい場所になると思いませんか？

Love is in such short supply in the world these days. We should be thankful when we receive it, in whatever way it comes, be it romantic, or platonic. And, we should also give it too, to make this world a better place.

The Elusive Dream。。。。かなわない夢

今日、ニュースでMichelle Kwanがオリンピック出場辞退)したことを聞いて、悲しくなりました。ここまでくるのに大変な道を通ってきたのに、今になってやっぱり自分には無理だと気づいた時の彼女の気持ちはどうだったのかと思うと。。。。オリンピックで今年こそ金メダルを取りたかった彼女の夢は、そのまま実現しない夢で終わってしまいましたね。

I couldn't help but be sad when I heard that Michelle Kwan had decided to withdraw from the Winter Olympic games. She had fought so hard in her pursuit to win the elusive gold medal, but now, as they say, that dream will have to stay a dream....



でも、ここまで一生懸命全力を尽くしてきたので後悔しないでほしいですね。スケートの世界では、彼女はトップクラスですし、オリンピックの世界でも彼女の実力はちゃんと認められています。

At least she tried her very best until the very end, and she is, indeed, one of the best skaters this sport has ever known.



KwanのかわりにSarah Hughesの妹さんが出場)します。お姉さんみたいに金メダルを手に入れることができるのでしょうか？もしそうであったら、姉妹ですごいことですよね。どのような結果になるか楽しみです。

Now, as Sarah Hughes' younger sister takes Kwan's place, I wonder if she can do what her older sister did four years ago and win another Olympic gold to , "keep it in the family"? I guess we will all have to wait and see.



かなう夢があれば、かなわない夢もある。ある人はそれが運命だというかもしれません。でも、夢を実現するためには、どこまでが私たち自身の責任で、どこまでが運命なのか考えてしまいます。

Some dreams come true, and some dreams don't. Some say it is fate, destiny. I wonder how much of the responsibility lies in our hands as to the fulfillment of our dreams, and how much is out of our control?

でも、一生懸命夢を実現するためにがんばれば、たとえ夢がかなわなくても、「できることはやった」と言えたらいいですね。

But, as long as we try our best to pursue our dreams, then if we fail, at least we can say, "We gave it our best shot ."
