As 字幕研究 , I went to the cinema and saw Doctor Sleep (2019).

Compared to The Shining(1980), which was translated by 戸田奈津子 , I think the person who was in charge of the subtitles for Doctor Sleep did a very good job.

There is only one thing that i personally thought could have been translated better...

There is one scene in the movie where the main character, Danny, steps into the haunted hotel (from The Shining) after a long time of avoiding it.

As the light start to flicker on, Danny says the phrase "Wakey Wakey".

Though I do not have a screenshot of this scene with japanese subtitles, i distintly remember the subtitles saying "起きろ".

Of course "起きろ" does get the job done in showing that the spirits in the hotel are about to awaken and a horrible chain of events are about to happen.

But, i belive that the prase "起きる時間だよ" would have been better.

In my opinion, "起きろ" is a strong phrase, and it makes it sound like Danny is forcing the spirits to wake up.

But it is actually the opposite. Danny is trying to use the spirits to his advantage. So through the phrase "Wakey wakey", he is trying to get the spirits attention without upsetting them too much.

"Wakey wakey" is also a phrase that is used in a soft-setting. For example, mother to child.

That is another reason why i believe that this phrase should have been translated to "起きる時間だよ".
