In a speech made at a partially collapsed schoolbuilding that was televised live, China's President Hu Jin Tao said that rebuilding efforts were testament to national strength. He added that rebuilding tasks will be accelerated from 3 years to 2.
Thousands of people in Sichuan Province marked its annniverysary by mouning their dead. Howver, a report says that some parents were prevented from holding a ceremony to mourn their children, underlying political sensitivity to allegations surrounding school misconstruction due to corruption.
