What? Rice is a fruit!

When I was a kid, I always thought that fruits were sweet—like apples and strawberries—but I would have never guessed that rice, cucumbers, and even corn are also called fruits. Furthermore, when I tell other people that rice, cucumbers and corn are not vegetables, but a fruit instead, they were also as surprised as I was when I learned about this.
I first learned about fruits and vegetables when I was in college biology. As soon as I had learned about this new profound knowledge about fruits and vegetables, I had to tell my friends. To my surprise, many of my friends were also misinformed as to what makes a fruit a fruit and what make a vegetable a vegetable. So what is a vegetable? First, let me explain what makes a fruit a fruit because it will make explaining what a vegetable is that much easier for me.
In scientific terms, a fruit is the mature ovary of a flower. When a flower is pollinated, it starts to develop a seed/s. To insure the seeds survival in its environment, the flower’s ovary encompasses the seed. Overall, an ovary protects and provides the seed/s with nutrition.
Now lets take a closer look at a cucumber: A cucumber is a fruit because it came from the flower’s ovary, which protects the seeds within it and provides the seeds with nutrition. The same goes for eggplants, peppers, and avocados. In a nutshell, if it came from a flower, then it’s a fruit.
To make things a little more interesting, there are many types of fruit in the fruit kingdom. In the fruit kingdom, there are three main types of fruit: First, the simple fruits, which include many varieties such as, berries, drupes (i.e. peaches, cherry’s and coconuts), legumes, nuts, and much more. The second type is the aggregate fruits, which include strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries. I should also note that even though a strawberry has the word berry in its name, it is not really a berry. It is an aggregate fruit! OK, moving on. The third type is called multiple fruit, which includes oranges and pineapples.
As far as vegetables go, a vegetable is everything but the mature ovary of a flower. Therefore, such things as stems, leaves, and roots are all called vegetables. For example, potatoes, garlic, carrots, rosemary, and basil leaves are all called vegetables. So the next time you make soup with corn, eggplant, squash, or peppers, call it fruit soup instead of vegetable soup.
