このように希望を美徳として語るアンディに、レッドは言う
Red: Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.

そしてアンディは牢獄を出た後、手紙でレッドにこう語りかける。
Andy:Remember, Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
（レッド、希望は素晴らしいものだ。おそらくもっとも素晴らしいなものだ。
そして素晴らしいものは死なない。）
そして最後のレッドのナレーションでのセリフ
Red:I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend, and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.
