I have a long and profound connection
with the people of Japan.
I have performed there for four decades
and as I watched the terrible events
in Japan last week,
I felt an unusual closeness with those suffering.
I have many friends in Japan
and their suffering became my own.
I also know the resilience and courage
of the Japanese people.
I know that these extraordinary qualities
will become more and more present
as the full extent of the tragedy becomes known.
Japan will recover.

私は日本の皆さんと永く深い繋がりを持っています。
40年のあいだ日本でプレイしてきました。
そして先週おきた痛ましい災害を目にして
皆さんの痛みを 表現しがたく感じました。
日本にはたくさんの友人がおり、
彼らの痛みが私の胸に伝わりました。
同時に私は日本人の強さと勇気を知っています。
この惨事の詳細が明らかになるにつれて
日本人の偉大さがますます浮き彫りになってくると思います。
日本は必ず復活します。
