前にも書いたが、私の住む街は国家のわきの下（Nation’s Armpit）呼ばれている、語るも恥ずかしい街です。
私もそうだったが、ニューヨークに住むまで、ニューヨークってすごい怖いところだと思い込んでいた。確かにハーレムの辺りに行くとちょっと怖いなと思う場面に出くわすこともあるが、それ以外は相当安全だと思う。はっきり言って、現在私が住んでいる街のほうが、全然危険だ、というと、同僚や近隣の住民は断固として否定する。私たちが住む町がニューヨークより危ないなんて、ありえない、と。あのね、ニューヨークっていうところは、危ない地域と危なくない地域がはっきり分かれていて、用のない人は危ない地域には行かないの。
一方この街は危ない地域と安全な地域が混在していて、どこで何が起きても不思議ではないような状況だ。私も一応高級住宅街といわれる地域に住んでいるが、ハイウエイを超えると、ギャングがたむろっている。オフィス街にも得体のしれない浮浪者がふらふらしているし、“ここは安全”というところがないのだ。先月久しぶりにフィラデルフィアのダウンタウンに遊びに行ったが、昔は怖いと思っていたダウンタウンがすっかりきれいになっていてびっくりした。
まったくわきの下の住民は始末がわるい。危ないという自覚がない限り、安全性を向上させなければならない、という意識は生まれないわけで、状況はぜったいよくならない。それでもわきの下ピープルは“そんなに危険じゃない”といってきかない。
そんな矢先、先週社員宛に勤労から入ってきたメイル。
Recently there have been two reported incidences of violence near (a stabbing between 5:30pm and 7:30pm this past Friday night near our office and a shooting in front of the nearby nightclub at nighttime a couple of weekends ago). The incidences are unrelated and neither of the incidences involved our company’s individuals.
We want to make sure that our employees put their safety first and are aware of their surroundings as they are walking to and from cars / buses or nearby buildings. If you need to leave the building after dark, try to walk out with someone else or ask one of the security guards at the front desk to walk you to your car. Also, there are panic boxes in the parking garage. Please report any suspicious activities to the police.
