先日友人と食事をした時のデザートにキーウィフルーツが入っていました。 友人は「キーウィはもともと中国で採れた果物で名前は中国語で “モンキー・ピーチ” だったそうだよ。」と言うのです。以前に何かの雑誌の記事で読んだ事があるらしくさらにもう少し詳しく説明してくれました。１００年くらい前にニュージーランドから中国を訪れた女性がこのキーウィフルーツを食べて大変気に入り、種を国に持ち帰り育てたらしいのです。これが現在のニュージーランド産のキーウィの始まりです。名前はニュージーランドの国鳥、キーウィ・バードにちなんでキーウィと変更され、今では中国にも輸出されているそうです。果物に限らず、同じようなルーツを持つものって他にもあるんでしょうね。誰かご存知ありませんか？
I had a dinner with my friend the other day and found a piece of Kiwi fruit in the desert. My friend told me that the Kiwi was originated in China having been called as “Monkey Peach” in Chinese. Seems like, he learned this from an article of some magazines. He explained a little more in details as follows, a New Zealand lady traveled to China about 100 years ago and ate the fruit there. She liked it so much and took some seeds back to harvest them in her country. This is the beginning of the current Kiwi fruit in New Zealand. The name was from the Kiwi bird, which is the National Bird of the country. There must be other cases not only in fruits but also other categories, of which the origins have interesting stories. Does anybody know any of them?
