人間が好きな僕は、人物モデルを前に油彩画を描いている時は、我を忘れて没頭している。絵画を描くということは、観察することでもある。人間は学習して一つの型を教えられがちだ。空は青く太陽は赤くとかね。そんな単純では無いのに、学校の美術教育で絵画が記号化されてしまい、観察力などなくなってしまう。人物画でも、白人は白く、黒人は黒くだとか描きがちだ。でも黒人は黒くは無いのだ。
僕の描いている絵を見てほしい。いわゆる黒人はピグメントが多い皮膚をしている。でも色の元の血液の色は白人にアジア人に黒人も全く一緒だ。黒人の肌は下からの赤い血の色が色素で修飾されて、美しい紫がかった光沢色となる。これを観察して現すのは、絵画の喜びなのですね。
I love people, and when I am painting in oil with a human model in front of me, I lose myself in the process.
Painting is also about observation. Human beings tend to learn and are taught a certain pattern when they are students. The sky is blue, the sun is red, and so on. It is not that simple, but art education in schools has made painting into a symbolic process, and we have lost the ability to observe. Even in portraits, whites tend to be painted white and blacks black. But black people are not black color.
Look at my paintings. So-called black people have skin with a lot of pigment. But the original blood color is exactly the same among Whites, Asians, and Blacks. The skin of blacks is pigmented with the red blood color from below, which gives it a beautiful purplish sheen. So, it is the joy of painting to observe and manifest this.
