Most major lawn-care toolmakers have begun producing cordless models of their implements. Generally, the tools are powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
Cordless lawn-care tools share several benefits with gas-powered models, including power and portability. Unlike gasoline-powered tools, cordless models feature sure, instant starting, easy maintenance and pollution-free operation that doesn’t require petroleum products. The major drawback of cordless tools is battery life, which is notoriously short.
To find out how a cordless string trimmer performs, I asked Black & Decker to let me try the LST220, which has a 12-inch cut and is powered by a 20-volt battery such as Black Decker HPD1200 Battery , Black Decker HP12K Battery , Black Decker HPB18 Battery , Black Decker FSB18 Battery , Black Decker FS180BX Battery , Black Decker NST2018 Battery , Black Decker GLC2500 Battery , Black Decker NHT518 Battery , Black Decker PS18K2 Battery , Black Decker CP12K Battery , Black Decker CP122K Battery , Black Decker SX3000 Battery . The trimmer comes with two batteries and a charger for double the cutting time.
The straight shaft offers good reach and maneuverability and it rotates so the head is vertical for edging. The auto-feed spool works perfectly, and the single line cuts efficiently. The head is equipped with an adjustable guard to protect against trimming too close to desirable plants.
The trimmer’s handle is very comfortable, but the trigger doesn’t include a lock, so you have to hold the switch down while you’re trimming. That can tire your hand after a few minutes.
The biggest negative is that the battery lasts only 15 to 20 minutes on a full charge if the trimmer runs continuously. This is typical of lithium-ion batteries of similar voltage. With two batteries, though, I can finish trimming and edging my yard with time to spare on the second battery.
