The Executive Board of the European Microscopy Society (EMS) has received the decision of the Jury of the EMS Outstanding Paper Award for the year 2012. In total 28high quality papers were nominated by EMS members. Of these 28 papers, 3 were selected as award winners, one in each category "Instrumentation and Technique Development", "Materials Sciences" and "Life Sciences".

Winners of the 2012 EMS Outstanding Paper Award:

1. Instrumentation and Technique Development: Big Bang' tomography as a new route to atomic-resolution electron tomography, Dirk Van Dyck, Joerg R Jinschek & Fu-Rong Chen; Nature 486, 243-246 (2012) 

2. Materials Sciences: Toroidal Plasmonic Eigenmodes in Oligomer Nanocavities for the Visible, Burcu Ögüt, Nahid Talebi, Ralf Vogelgesang, Wilfried Sigle, and Peter A van Aken; Nano Letters 12, 5239-5244 (2012)

3. Life Sciences: Virtual nanoscopy: Generation of ultra-large high resolution electron microscopy maps, Frank GA Faas, M Cristina Avramut, Bernard M van den Berg, A. Mieke Mommaas, Abraham J Koster, and Raimond BG Ravelli; Cell Biology 198, 457-469 (2012)

The first authors of these papers will receive their award during the award ceremony at the congress dinner of the EMS Extension MC2013 in Regensburg, Germany.
