村上春樹さんの『羊をめぐる冒険』を読みました。
『風の歌を聴け』『1973年のピンボール』に続く「青春3部作完結編」ですが、この作品だけでも十分楽しめる読み応えのあるものでした。
余韻が冷めないうちに英訳本を読み始めていますが、ひとつの作品を二通りの味わいで楽しめるのでお勧めです！
２０代後半の主人公「僕」は離婚して、「ほっそりとした素敵な体と魔力的なほど完璧な形をした一組の耳を持った」彼女と出会います。
夏も終わりに近づいたその九月の昼下がり、「僕」は仕事を休んでベットの中で彼女と過ごしていると彼女が突然予言します。
「ねえ、あと十分ばかりで大事な電話がかかってくるわよ」
「羊のことよ」「たくさんの羊と一頭の羊」
「そして冒険が始まるの」

そして、私もその冒険に引き込まれていったのでした。

羊男は頭からすっぽりと羊の皮をかぶっていた。彼のずんぐりとしたからだつきはその衣装にぴったりとあっていた。腕と脚の部分はつぎはぎされた作りものだった。頭部を覆うフードもやはり作りものだったが、そのてっぺんについた二本のくるくると巻いた角は本物だった。フードの両側には針金で形をつけたらしい平べったいふたつの耳が水平につきだしていた。顔の上半分を覆った皮のマスクと手袋と靴下はお揃いの黒だった。衣装の首から股にかけてジッパーがついていて簡単に着脱できるようになっていた。
腕の部分にはやはりジッパーのついたポケットがあって、そこに煙草とマッチが入っていた。羊男はセブンスターをくちにくわえてマッチで火をつけ、ふうっとため息をついた。

非現実的なのに、その妙にリアルないでたちの羊男さん。
＊「僕」がリュックのポケットからラークを三箱出して与えると、大事そうに腕についたポケットにしまい、その部分が四角くふくらむ。

その四角いふくらみやひらひらと揺れる耳が、脳裏に焼きついて離れないのです。
I read Haruki Murakami’s novel “A wild sheep chase”. This is the third and final story of his first books “Hear the Wing Sing” and “Pinball 1973”. As this is translated into English, I read the English Version now. So, I can enjoy his novel twice in another taste. The main character is in his twenties, he is divorced, but recently he got a girlfriend "with an attractive slender body and a pair of the most bewitching, perfectly formed ears” One September afternoon towards summer’s end, he took the day off and was laying in bed with her. And she said “Listen, an important phone call is going to come through in ten minutes” “Something about sheep,” “lots of sheep and one sheep in particular.” “And that’ll be the beginning of a wild adventure.” I got drawn into the wild adventure too and I recommend you to experience the wonderful chase. I would love to introduce you to “The Sheep Man” last. It’s just, you can’t help but like a person with that sort of character. The Sheep Man wore a full sheepskin pulled over his head. The arms and legs were fake and patched on, but his stocky body fit the costume perfectly. The hood was also fake, but the two horns that curled from his crown were absolutely real. Two flat ears, probably wire-reinforced, stuck out level from either side of the hood. The leather mask that covered the upper half of his face, his matching gloves, and socks, all were block. There was a zipper from neck to crotch. On his chest was a pocket, also zippered, from which he extracted his cigarettes and matches.
