Dozens of veterans across the state received recognition in the form of medals and badges Monday that officials said they should've gotten more than a decade ago.The medals and badges were earned while protecting our country at war and belong to brave men and women in Cambria County, but up until two months ago, they had been lost for more than a decade."They were found in a storage shed of a governor's outreach program," said Tricia Shaffer. "Somebody was cleaning it out and they were actually going to throw them away."But that's when another man stepped in and reached out to the director of veterans services in Somerset County to return the medals to their rightful owners."I don't know how many in all but I do know that Cambria County had the most," said Shaffer.Officials were able to track down 36 veterans in Cambria County.Some were there in person Monday to accept the awards themselves and some had family members there to accept for them while others are no longer here."Maybe whenever they ordered them or should have been given them back in 2000, 2001 maybe then they were alive," said Shaffer. "Unfortunately now they're not."For Ralph Weakland's family, the medals mean much more."I know that would mean a lot to my mom because she had no idea either," said Mary Rose Weakland, Ralph's daughter.His daughters said war is something he never brought up, and something their mother had always questioned."He wouldn't talk about it at all," said Mary Rose. "I mean, that was something that, no, and he never criticized mom stating it was his nerves, and I still don't know nothing.""I absolutely love my job, love the vets, love working with them," said Shaffer. "So for me, this gives me great pleasure being able to do this for them."The question everyone's probably asking is, how did this happen?Shaffer said she doesn't know, in fact, she said no one's certain.She said it's not uncommon for it take a while for awards to be delivered to veterans and their families and said many of them are too proud to ever even make a request.
