ギネス・ワールド・レコーズでは『人類で最も成功したエンターテイナー』として認定されている。CDやビデオなどの世界総売上げは7億5000万枚以上に昇る。
2009年6月25日、自宅近くのカリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校（UCLA）医療センターに呼吸停止の状態で運ばれ、その後死亡が確認された。50歳没。午後2時26分（PDT）に死亡確認。亡くなった今、史上最高のエンターテイナーとして語り継がれている。
