今日は保険について書きたいと思う。
Today I would like to talk about health insurance system in states.
日本では国民は皆保険に加入しているし、どこでも医療を受けることができる。
In Japan every citizen is guaranteed to have health insurance either by government or company and we can go to almost every doctor or hospital.
しかしながらアメリカではそうはいかないのだ。自分で保険を選び、通いたい医者が保険によってカバーされているかを調べる必要がある。
However situation in the states is totally different. You need to choose insurance plan, and need to find out whether the doctor you would like to see is in the network or not by yourself.
僕自身は大学でカバーされているUC SHIPという保険に入っている、しかし家族を入れるとなると高額なのと行きたい医者がカバーされていないこともあり保険に入ることになった。
I am coverd by heath insurance offered by university, which is called UC SHIP. The annual fee to add my family is so expensive and this insurance does not cover the doctor where my family wants to go. We finally decide to find and choose insurance.
かかりつけの医者に連絡をしてカバーされている保険を確認したところPPOプランならカバーされてますよ、とのこと。そこでアメリカに移住後６０日以内に加入できるプランでかつPPOの保険はAnthem Blue Crossのみということで加入を決めた。ちなみにアメリカでは１１月から１２月の間しか保険に入ることができない、例外が認められるのは移住して６０日以内だ。
I called the doctor and confirmed that they cover almost every PPO plan. and decided to choose Anthem Blue Cross PPO, since it is the only insurance that the individual can choose for us, since my wife is pregnant. FYI, in the states you can only buy insurance plan between November and December, the only exception is within 60days after moving from other countries.
これで大丈夫だーとホッとしてたら、家族が風邪をひいたので医者に行った。そこで発覚したのが「保険がカバーされていない」という悲しい事実。よーく見ると保険証にPPO pathwayとの表記がある。PPOでもプランに差があるということを知らずに加入したのだ。。。医者に電話して確認したのにという気持ちと保険会社も違いがあるなら教えて欲しいということで猛抗議。
I was relieved at the time we finally got health insurance. Since my family got sick, we went to the doctor and found out that my plan does not cover that doctor. According to the hospital, my insurance is PPO plan but restricted plan called PPO pathway. We did not know that there are different PPO insurance. I feel so upset, because I confirmed with doctor and insurance company.
最終的に１２月までに違う保険に加入し１月からカバーされるものに変更することで落ち着いたが非常に焦った。
Finally we decided to change insurance starting from next January.
アメリカの洗礼だな。と思った。
保険の問題がアメリカの根深いところにあると実感した。
