The macmini with my iPhone backup is running Snow Leopard and my iPhone was on IOS7 - after hitting the 'slide to upgrade' problem with upgrading to IOS9 I found that the iTunes version I'd used to back up was not compatible with IOS9. Upgraded iTunes as far as I could but then found that IOS9 needs a version of iTunes that will not run on Snow Leopard.
I happened to have a partition with Lion installed so copied my IOS backups over to it and much to my surprise found that the updated iTunes could read my backups … although I still had the issue with the upgrade getting stuck.
Today I have done the procedure to restore my backup to a 'blank' iPhone running IOS 9.01 and it does seem to have worked - my message history is there, my photos are there, my mail account setups are there, calendar and contacts syncing properly…. However I do not have my purchased apps on the phone - I assume due to the fact that I had never synced with the iTunes library I used to restore. If I had pulled across the entire library and updated it for the new version of iTunes I suspect it would have installed them ..
as it is I'm fairly happy and will use the opportunity to just reinstall the apps I still need… the important stuff all has data in dropbox.
