Just before the monthly general meeting ended...

Em : In our January activity, we asked our learners what
　　 they wished to accomplish this year. I'd like to know
what's yours, too. Are you up for it?
Everyone: Game!
Em : I'll start. I vow to take things easy this year.
In 2011, I think I was always in a dash - even to catch
the train.
That's about to change (in a determined voice).
Sc : Welcome to my world! Hahaha!
Eu : I pledge to exercise more, perhaps do some jogging or
something.
Em : I support you on that, Euneece.
Eu : Thanks, Emery. Just a thought, "or something" could
mean running to catch the train so I already apologized
in advance should I run straight past you, OK?
F : Right-on, Euneece! Hahaha! I promise to be more
generous this year.
S : Aren't you already? Oh, my bad. You said "more generous."
Em : I'm a willing recipient. Shall we start with dinner
tonight?
F : Sorry guys, but I was thinking of being more giving to
my family.
J : All right, brothers and sisters, could I have my turn?
I resolve to lose at least 15 kilos this year.
Em, Eu, F: (in a cheerful manner) We're with you, Johnny!
N : How do you intend to do that?
J : Just like Euneece, I'll exercise more and try to control
my cravings for food (pause)...against my will.
F : You sounded like your world crashed.
J : It's totally wrecked! Hahaha!
Sh : Then from now on, the pantry's off limits to you.
S : Oh, no!
J : Oh, yes! I wanna be a proud "loser" this year.
N : We're right behind you, Johnny! Go, go, go!

ちょうど月例会議を終える前...

Em : 1月のアクティビティーでは、今年の抱負をラーナーさん
たちに聞きました。今度はみんなのも知りたいんだけど、
どうかしら？
Everyone: もちろん！
Em : 私から始めるわ。今年は気楽に構えることを誓うわ。2011年
は私いつもせかせかしていたと思うの。電車に乗るときでさ
えそうだったし。変えどきだと思うの。（決然とした口調で）
Sc : 僕の世界へようこそ！ハハハ！
Eu : 私はもっと運動することを誓うわ。たぶんジョギングをする
とか何か。
Em : 応援するわ、ユニース。
Eu : ありがと、エメリー。ただ思ったんだけど、「何か」って
電車に乗るために走ることともいえるから、先にお詫びして
おくけど、私はあなたをおいて直進するからね、いい？
F : その調子、ユニース！ハハハ！私は、今年はもっと
おおらかになるって約束する。
S : すでにそうじゃないの？ああ、違った、「もっとおおらか」
って言ったんだったね。
Em : 私は喜んで受け取るわよ。今日の夕食から始めない？
F : 申し訳ないけど、私は家族により尽くそうって思ってたのよね。
J : よし、じゃみんな、僕の番でいいかな？今年は少なくとも
15キロ落とすことを誓うよ。
Em, Eu, F: （陽気な様子で）私たちサポートするわよ、ジョニー！
N : どうやってやるつもりなの？
J : ユニースみたいにもっと運動して、食欲をコントロール
してみる...（間を置き）意志に反してね。
F : この世の終わりみたいに聞こえるわよ。
J : まったくの崩壊だよ！　ハハハ！
Sc : じゃあ今から、君は食品棚は立ち入り禁止ね。
S : あーあ！
J : いいとも！今年は誇らしき「敗者」になりたいからね。
N : 私たちあなたを応援するわよ、ジョニー！　ゴー、ゴー、ゴー！

"Dressed to the Nines"


Characters: J-Julita ; K - Kumiko; U - Umi(receptionist)
~Right after Julita's private class

J - You're coming to the party, right?
Y - Yes, I am.
J - Are you bringing some friends along?
Y - No, I won't. Most of my friends are quite shy with
foreigners. Perhaps next time.
J - All right.
Y - By the way, I want to ask about the attire. It says in the
invitation that it's semi-formal to formal. I'm planning to
wear a black suit, would that be okay?
J - I think so.
Y - Maybe you'd be well-dressed again, just like in the
Halloween party.
J - (smiles) I take that as a compliment. I believe that since I
don't get to attend parties everyday, I might as well be
dressed to the nines.
(both exit the classroom and walk towards the reception table)
How about you, Umi, have you planned what to wear to the party?
U - Actually, I'm thinking of wearing a black suit.
(Julita and Kumiko looked at each other)


●Useful & Humorous expression



★dressed to the nines

フォーマルな言い方ですが、一番良い洋服を着る、または一番フォ
ーマルに着飾る事をこのように表現します。

Ex. As a P.R. Manager, she always sees to it that she's dressed
to the nines during press conferences.
　　 PRマネージャーとして、彼女は記者会見の時はいつもきちんと正装
　　 している。



★attire

attire とは服装の事ですが、どちらかと言うとフォーマルな服装を指し
ます。
Ex. Attires worn at wedding parties sometimes differ from one
　　 country to another.
　　 結婚式での服装は、しばしば国によって違う。



★compliment

compliment は、人に対する賛辞ですが、場合によってはお世辞にもなり
ます。

Ex. He gave her a compliment for a well-prepared party.
　　 彼はきちんと準備されたパーティについて彼女に賞賛を与えた。
★Perhaps next time

誘われて、それを断る時に単に"No." と言うのは少し失礼ですよね。
そんな時、やんわりと断る時にもこの表現は使えます。

Ex. Would you like to go out this weekend?
I'd rather not because I have to play tennis. Perhaps next time.
　　 この週末デートしない？
　　 テニスしなくちゃいけないから行きたくないな。またね。



◆「着飾る」
登場人物　J - ジュリータ 、 K - クミコ（ラーナー）、
　　　　　 U - ウミ（レセプショニスト）
(ジュリータのプライベートクラスの直後に）

J- パーティーは来ますよね？
K- ええ。
J- お友達も一緒に連れてくるの？
K- いいえ、連れてこないわ。友達はほとんどみんな、外国人にはシャイ
　 だから。多分次の機会に。
J- わかりました。
K- ところで服装について聞きたいんだけど。招待状にはセミ・フォーマ
　 ルからフォーマルってかいてあるでしょ。黒のスーツを着ていこうと
　 思ってるんだけど、それでいいかしら？
J- いいと思いますよ。
K- あなたはまたきまった格好で来るんでしょうね、ハローウインパー
　 ティでそうだったように。
J- (微笑んで）お世辞をありがとう。毎日パーティーがあるわけじゃない
　 から、豪華にめかしこんでも悪くないって思うわ。
(二人はクラスルームを出て受付のテーブルに近づく）
　 ウミ、あなたはどう？パーティーに何を着ていくか決めた？
U- 実は、黒のスーツを着ていこうと思ってるの。
(ジュリータとクミコはお互いに顔を見合わせる）
