In Dela Cruz English Club, we pride ourselves on exceptional
service and outstanding value. And since our learners' needs
always come first, we are hereby launching a series of videos
to improve English listening skill.
The topics are from our own Mail Magazine
which you have grown to love.


"Bon voyage" is a borrowed French expression used to express
farewell and good wishes to a departing traveler.
In the video, one of the governesses is getting ready to go
on a vacation.

Let us eavesdrop on their conversation.





1. Why is Julita handing over her classes to other governess?
a. Julita is leaving the company.
b. She is going on a vacation.
c. Julita is going to Osaka for a business trip.

2. Why is Diana nervous?
a. She is nervous because she is still a new governess.
b. Julita's learners are bad students.
c. Diana doesn't like meeting new people, that's why she is nervous.

3. Why did it take long for Marie to decide about her request?
a. Marie was shy to ask Julita her request.
b. Marie wanted to make a list of her requests.
c. She was trying to remember the flavor.



"Bon voyage"

Characters: J -Julita, M - Marie, A - Alice, D - Diana

~ Right after Julita handed over her classes to governess
relievers.

J：Once again, thank you for accepting to relieve me of my
classes during my vacation. I really appreciate your
sincerest assistance.
M：Don't mention it. Besides, teaching learners other than
my own classes gives me additional inspiration and
knowledge.
A: Same here. Also, it helps me gain more experience in
understanding various Japanese learning habits.
D: I've nothing more to add to what they've said.
Only that, being a new member of the faculty,
I'm as nervous as the learners are in seeing new faces.
J: That's a big relief. Although miles apart, I'm assured
that my learners will be receiving the kindest service
from people like you.
Okay, before I drop a tear, let me ask you then,
what souvenir would you like me to bring for you?
M: Come on, you know that we're also doing this because
it's part of our work. You're not obliged to return
the favor.
A: Besides, you'll only be staying in your hometown for
a week, right? You might not have much time for your own.
J: No, I mean it. When I ask for your requests, I'm true
to my word. So, don't hesitate.
D: If you insist, I'll have pork crackers,
the crispy one, please.
A: I'll have milk biscuits. Any maker will do.
J: How about you, Marie, nothing special in mind?
M: Hmm, I do. Could you give me more time to think?
J: Okay. (waiting)
M: Not now. I need more time to recall the exact
flavor's names.






●Useful & Humorous expression



★bon voyage
もともとはフランス語で "bon" が good、"voyage" が trip という意味で
す。bon voyage　で　have a good trip という意味で旅立ちの時に送り
出す側が言う決り文句。すでに英語としても定着しています。


★turn over
他の誰かに自分の仕事や計画などの権利や責任を与える、という事です。
ダイアログでは引継ぎとしています。

Ex.Local police have turned the case over to the FBI.
地元の警察はその事件をFBIに引き継いだ。


★faculty
学校や大学などのすべての先生を指す。教授陣。全教職員。

Ex.The faculty has suffered from the scandal.
教授陣はそのスキャンダルに苦しめられた。



★return the favor
favor は誰かを助ける、または親切のために何かをやってあげる事を表し
ます。ここではその favor を返す(return)という事で「お返し」としまし
た。

Ex.Could you do me a favor?
お願いできますか？



★don't hesitate
hesitate は躊躇すると言う事なので、"don't hesitate"　で「躊躇しない
で」が文字通りの意味ですが、遠慮しないで～してください、という時に
使われる決り文句です。

Ex.Don't hesitate to call me if you need any help.
　 なにか助けが必要な時は、遠慮しないで電話して。





◆「よい旅を」


登場人物 ： ジュリータ:J、マリー: M、Alice : A、ダイアナ: D


ジュリータが（彼女がいない間）彼女のクラスを受け持って
くれるガヴァネス達に引継ぎをした後

J:私の休暇の間、私のクラスを受け持ってくれてありがとう。
　もう一度お礼を言うわ。本当にあなた達の誠実な助力に
　感謝します。
M:どういたしまして。それに自分のクラス以外の生徒さんを
　教える事は、さらに元気と知識を与えてくれるわ。
A:私もそうね。他のクラスを教える事は色々な日本の学習
　習慣を理解する経験を積む助けになるわ。
D:私は特に彼女達が言った事に付け加える事は無いわ。
　ただ、ここの講師陣の新しいメンバーとして、生徒さんが
　新しいメンバーに会う時と同じくらい緊張しています。
J:それを聞いて安心したわ。遠く離れていても、私の生徒
　さんはあなた達のような人たちから心のこもったサービス
　を受けているであろうことを確信できるわ。さあ、涙を
　こぼす前にお土産は何がいいか聞かせて。
M:何言ってるのよ。あのね、これは私たちの仕事の一部だから
　やっているんじゃない。お返しをしなくちゃなんて考えなくて
　いいのよ。
A:それに自分のホームタウンに1週間いるだけでしょ？あまり
　自分の時間も取れないかもしれないじゃない。
J:いいえ、そのつもりなんだから。私がリクエストを聞くときは
　その言葉通りよ。だから遠慮しないで。
D:そういうんだったら、ポーククラッカーのぱりぱりのやつ
　お願いね。
A:私はミルクビスケットがいいわ。どこのメーカーのでもいいわ。
J:マリー、あなたは。何も考えて無いの？
M:考えてるわ。もう少し考える時間をもらえます？
J:オーケー。（待っている）
M:今じゃないわ。その味のきちんとした名前を思い出すのにもっと
　時間が必要なの。

J: (grabs her cell phone and hides under her desk)
W: Are you okay, Julita?
(after a few seconds)
J: (returns to her chair) I'm fine. Just a little afraid, that's
all.
(Aya returned from her break.)
I: I'm back. (to Julita) You look so pale, what happened?
W: She's having an aftermath.

Useful and humorous expressions

★Oh, my God!
Godはキリスト教徒、ユダヤ教徒、イスラム教徒が信じる天地の創造主、
　いわゆる神様でそのまま直訳すれば「ああ、私の神様」という事ですが
　驚いたり、困ったり、おもしろがったりする時に、言う事を強調するた
　めに使う言葉。Oh　God！とも使う。
E.g. Oh God, I can't believe he did such things.


★unexceptional here
　exceptionalで例外的な、特別のという意味を現し、それに反対を意味
　するunがつく事で「例外的ではない＝普通の」という意味になっている。
E.g. Ramen shops are unexceptional in Japan.
　 （ラーメン屋は日本では珍しくありません。）

★so pale
"pale"は肌の色を表わすことばで、主に病気や心配事、恐れなどにより
　青白い顔色を表現する時に使います。
　E.g. You look so pale. Are you okay?
No. I feel chilly.
　　（顔が青ざめているよ。大丈夫？）
　 　（うーん。ちょっと寒いんだ。）

★aftermath
戦争とか天災、事故など悪い事が起こって人々がまだ、その影響を受け
　ている期間の事をさす。
　E.g. Several people got sick in the aftermath of the accident.
（その事故の影響で何人かの人が具合が悪くなった。）
　

◆「余波」

登場人物：A - アヤ; J - ジュリーター; S - 島、P - パトリシア
　　　　　　
～大宮の地震の間に

P：あー！地震だ。（自分の机にすがりつく）
S：落ち着いて。そんなに大きくないよ。
J：パトリシアはまだ日本に来て数年だから地震になれていないのよ。
　　大丈夫よ。ここではよくあることだから。
　 （また揺れる）
J：（携帯電話をつかんで机の下にかくれる）
P：ジュリータ、大丈夫？
　 （数秒後）
J：（イスに戻って）大丈夫よ。ちょっと心配だっただけ。
　 （アヤが休憩からもどる）
A：ただいま。（ジュリータに）顔が青ざめてるけど、何かあったの？
P：（地震の）余波を受けているところ。

During a usual free chat.

E: (to Hiro) You look so beat.
H: Setting the next fiscal year's budget is quite
perplexing. Can’t wait for it to be over.
K: Same goes with my husband. March is one of the
busiest months of the year.
E: Anything that keeps you busy, Keiko?
K: Meetings with the other moms of my son’s class.
We are working on their graduation album as a
simple keepsake for them.
T: Oh, your son is graduating from elementary.
Congratulations!
K: Graduation is a milestone not only for graduates
but also for us parents (in a proud tone).
T: You are perfectly right.
H: (to Taka) How was your TOEIC test last Saturday?
T: Argh. I wanted to forget that!
K: When’s the result out?
T: Two weeks from now. I’m keeping my fingers crossed
for a high score. It is important to me.
E: I guess March is full of significant events in our
lives and companies. For DCEC, March is our
anniversary.
H: That reminds me of DCEC’s “On Cloud 9” event.
Emery, I am sorry I have to pass this time
(with a pleading look).
E: OK (with a glum face). You’ll miss out the fun but
I do understand.
K: Don’t be sad Emery. I’ll be able to come.
Plus, I’ll be tagging my son along.
E: (face brightened) That’s great! (turning to Taka)
and you Taka?
T: Can I answer next week? Have to check with my
girlfriend first. I might ask her to come too.
E: OK, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for your ‘yes’.
I’ll probably need Hiro and Keiko’s fingers too.

Hiro and Keiko showed their crossed fingers to Taka.

E:（ヒロに）なんだかお疲れのようね。
H: 次の会計年度の予算をたてるのにかなりまごついていて、早く
終わらせたいよ。
K: 私の夫も同じことをやっているわ。3月は1年でもっとも忙しい
　 月のひとつね。
E: 他にも忙しいことある、ケイコ？
K: 息子のクラスのママさんたちとのミーティングよ。
息子たちの記念の卒業アルバムを製作しているのよ。
T: へぇー、息子さんは小学校を卒業するんだね。
おめでとう！
K: 卒業式は卒業生だけじゃなく、私たち親たちにとってもひとつ
の節目だからね（誇らしげな口調で）
T: 全くもってその通り。

それに息子も一緒に連れてくるから。
E:（顔を輝かせ）よかったわ！（タカの方へ向き）あなたは？
タカ。
T: 来週返事してもいいかな？彼女に聞いてみないと。一緒に来る
かどうかも聞いてみるかも。
E: 了解。「イエス」の返事が聞けるよう祈ってるわ。ヒロとケイコ
のお祈りも必要ね。

ヒロとケイコがタカに十字に交差させた指を見せた。
