Euneece got back to the office from her lunch break, holding
something she had bought from the convenience store.
U: What do you have there Euneece?
E: Something for dessert. I was craving for ice cream …
N: (Upon hearing Euneece’s response) Ice cream? In this
freezing cold day? You must be kidding!
E: It isn’t a crime to crave, is it? Anyway, my favorite
flavor wasn’t available so I bought this chocolate-
coated pretzels instead.
U: Looks yummy. (returning to her desk)
E: (opening one pack in front of Nicole) Would you like to
have some, Nicole?
N: Thank you. I wouldn’t turn down the offer. I love any
kind of chocolate.
(Nicole gets one stick of the pretzels)
E: Please get two.
N: One will do. Besides, that’s your dessert, remember?
E: I don’t mind. In my hometown, there’s a general belief
that if you’re offered something such as this, you
should get at least two of them.
N: (curious) Why is that?
E: It’s just a superstition, but they say, you'll get
widowed early in your life if you get just one.
So, it should be one for your life and the other for
your spouse.
N: I haven’t heard about that but to be safe, I’ll have
two. I don’t want to get widowed before I even get
married.
E: How about you, Umi? Would you like to try this?
U: (Coming from her desk) I couldn’t help but overhear
your explanation about the superstition, so can I have
more than two to spare my children, too?
E: (Surprised, and jokingly said ) I’m not sure if there's
an extension to that superstition, Umi, but if there is,
perhaps it'll be that whoever gets more than offered will
be doomed.
U: Oops… I suddenly don't feel like eating. Thanks for
the offer.

グされたプレッツェルにしたの。
U: おいしそう。（机に向き直る）
E: （ニコルの前で1つ袋を開けて）ニコル、はいどうぞ、いる？
N: ありがとう。もちろんありがたくいただくわ。チョコなら
何でも好きなの。
（ニコルがプレッツェルを1本取る）
E: 2本どうぞ。
N: 1本でいいわよ。それにそれあなたのデザートでしょ、忘れた？
E: いいのいいの。私の地元ではね、こんないわれがあるのよ。
こんな風に何か差し出されたら、少なくとも2つ受け取らなきゃ
いけないっていう。
N: （興味津々に）それはまたどうして？
E: 単なる迷信に過ぎないんだけど、1つだけ受け取ると早いうちに
旦那さんを亡くしちゃうんだって。だから、1つはあなたの人生
の、もうひとつはご主人の人生のってことになるわね。
N: 聞いたことないけど、でもそうね、念のため2本いただくわ。
結婚もまだしないうちに未亡人になんてなりたくないもの。
E: あなたはどう、ウミ？いかが？
U: （彼女の机からやって来て）その迷信についての解説が聞こえ
ちゃったんだけど、私は子供達の分までということで2本
以上もらってもいい？
E: (驚き、その後冗談めかして）その迷信に拡張があるかどうか
は定かじゃないわね、ウミ、でもあったとしてもよ、おそらく
差し出される以上に受け取った人は不運になるんだと思うわ。
U: あらら...何だか急に食べたくなくなっちゃた。勧めてくれて
ありがとね。
※DCECラーナーの皆さんはご存知ですが、Umiはまだ結婚もして
いないのに（将来の）子供の分まで欲しがったんですね。
だからユニースに「不運になる」なんて言われてしまいました。
